Hi,

I'm new here in the OS/2 land (if I don't count using it for short time as a child). I've got OS/2 Warp 3 and 4.5 and now I wonder what would be the best way to run any of them on my Linux computer. What would be the best virtual machine software? Can't wait to run OS/2 again and play Galactic Civilisations again :)

Thanks in advance for all your help!

JLP,

That's a great topic. Although I have eCS 1.1 on my desktop, I run RedHat Fedora Core 5 on my trusty IBM ThinkPad T30. If you run through a battery of tests, please post your results, or better yet, maybe write up a short article (ie howto,etc.). TIA! :)

Parallels via Linspire/Freespire could be the quickest way to run the OS/2 kernel in a Linux box...

See => http://www.os2world.com/content/view/14604/2/

Linspire Linux or Freespire Linux distributions seem to be more dedicated to interoperability and up-to-date drivers which might have an indirect advantage for OS/2 and eComStation as a guest using Parallels.

OK thanks for the advice. I tried VMware and the open source VirtualBox and I couldn't make it work. It looks like that to make it work in VirtualBox you need a modern CPU with virtualisation technology. So now I have installed Parallels 2.2 on my laptop where I use Gentoo Linux and I'll see how it goes. It would really be awesome if the open source VirtualBox would have full support for OS/2 even on machines which don't have the most modern CPUs.

Hm even in Parallels I can't get OS/2 installed. I must be doing something wrong. I thought that OS/2 Warp 4.52 CD is bootable, but Parallels says it can't find any bootable CD if I try to use it. So I copied the three *.dsk floppy image file and tried to boot with them. Parallels reads the first two just fine, but when I switch to the third one I start getting some strange errors that some files can't be found (like disk controller driver files, keyboard, other *.sys, *.add files). So I really don't know what am I doing wrong now. Is there any special procedure I should be using?

Perhaps Parallels is designed for Windows and not for OS/2-eCS? Perhaps it is looking for files found only with Windows?  ???  I have installed eCS just using the cd. It installed quite well.

It turned out I was using the wrong CD. After some time I figured I could try the other CD and sure enough it was bootable :) I also didn't get any missing files errors. But unfortunately I also didn't get much further. While installation at first goes at normal speed, over time Parallels and installation just becomes slower and slower and eventually almost stops. Looks like a bug in Parallels. I'll have to ask them about this. If all else fails I guess I should just buy myself some old computer and install OS/2 directly on it.
