OpenOffice 4.11.1 won't start.
« on: March 24, 2026, 09:09:12 am »
Hi,

I've got a problem with Apache OpenOffice since the upgrade to ArcaOS 5.1.2
OpenOffice won't start, that means for every module.

The popuplog.os2 says:

------------------------------------------------------------

03-23-2026  20:47:57  SYS2070  PID 0074  TID 0001  Slot 0092
C:\PROGRAMS\APACHEOPENOFFICE\PROGRAM\SOFFICE.BIN
XML22->LIBCN0.2026
182
------------------------------------------------------------

Any idea how to solve this?

Grts,
Adrian

Up-date libc and/or make sure there is not another on LIBPATH or otherwise being loaded.

You have to downgrade the libxml2 package to version 2.9.10-3 via ANPM.

Yes, that was the error. Thanks Pete.

I do have the newer libc here if interested. Though backleveling xml2 for now may be simpler.

Dave!

Which libc is needed?

I have 1:0.1.14 installed here, and since I actually bit the bullet and finally moved to the latest libicu version (68 now vs old 56) OO v4.1.7 no longer works, which I suspected was due to the libicu upgrade...so my next step was to hit 4.1.11, but is that a potential problem?

The 4.1.11 readme shows the following requirements:

Code: [Select]
The following packages must be installed (dll only):
libc 0.6.6
gcc 4.9.2
gcc 4.7.3
gcc 4.4.4
ssl
curl
jpeg
xslt
libicu
z
xml2
stdcpp
stdcpp6
mmap
pthread
urpo
uclip

Here's the one I built the other day if you want to test. Not sure of the actual version besides it being the latest.
Edit: Is there an ICU legacy package?

There is libicu-legacy.4.2.1-2.oc00.i686, but that's by all accounts a fairly old thing.

Re: the build you provided, deployed it in a running system (so no reboot, but I did the 'repmod -u' thing), OO started up fine, but then died when I sylected the About dialog...I was just poking here and there to see if standard functionality was good.

Here is what I found in POPUPLOG.OS2:

Code: [Select]
03-26-2026  20:59:41  SYS2070  PID 01e6  TID 0001  Slot 0131
G:\APPS\GENERAL\OPENOFFICE417\PROGRAM\SOFFICE.BIN
I18NPOOL->ICUUC.__ZN3icu22RuleBasedBreakIterator5resetEv
127

I'll re-try following a reboot as there may always be some other DLL dependancy thing that's playing havoc here.

Thank you, as always!

Looks like the wrong version of ICU compared to what was expected. There really should be legacy versions of ICU as it changes so much each release.

FYI for anyone else that might see this:

...Here is what I found in POPUPLOG.OS2:

Code: [Select]
03-26-2026  20:59:41  SYS2070  PID 01e6  TID 0001  Slot 0131
G:\APPS\GENERAL\OPENOFFICE417\PROGRAM\SOFFICE.BIN
I18NPOOL->ICUUC.__ZN3icu22RuleBasedBreakIterator5resetEv
127

I'll re-try following a reboot as there may always be some other DLL dependancy thing that's playing havoc here.

Thank you, as always!

Following a re-boot and attempting to start OO produces the following in POPUPLOG.OS2:

Code: [Select]
03-27-2026  18:33:11  SYS3175  PID 0060  TID 0003  Slot 0097
G:\APPS\GENERAL\OPENOFFICE417\PROGRAM\SOFFICE.BIN
c0000005
1ffc1b65
P1=00000001  P2=00000000  P3=XXXXXXXX  P4=XXXXXXXX
EAX=00000000  EBX=00000000  ECX=0296ffe0  EDX=20030140
ESI=00000000  EDI=00000000
DS=0053  DSACC=f0f3  DSLIM=ffffffff
ES=0053  ESACC=f0f3  ESLIM=ffffffff
FS=150b  FSACC=00f3  FSLIM=00000030
GS=0000  GSACC=****  GSLIM=********
CS:EIP=005b:1ffc1b65  CSACC=f0df  CSLIM=ffffffff
SS:ESP=0053:0296ff94  SSACC=f0f3  SSLIM=ffffffff
EBP=0296ff94  FLG=00010213

DOSCALL1.DLL 0002:00001b65

So to Dave's point, there is more to it.

I'll log a request to see if we could get an updated version of libicu-legacy.4.2.1-2.oc00 issued. Will update this thread with that information.

EDIT
====

NEW Issue created => https://github.com/bitwiseworks/rpm-issues/issues/50

EDIT #2
======

Interesting response:

Quote
This is a known fact and was solved years ago in later aoo. So use later aoo to have it working. If we do a new icu we will make sure aoo 4.1.11 will still work. But not older ones sorry.

I'll re-post this thread's URL b/c clearly there is a disjoint here between the OO 4.1.11 and the XML2 updates, so I would suspect there might be numerous others that might run into this very same issue.

I noticed Apache open office is no longer listed as a selection at bitwise.

Hello

I remember that you were able to donate to Bitwise works (to the OpenOffice project) and you will receive the link to download it.
Does this mean nobody can get the link anymore?
Should we talk to Bitwise to see if we can share the OpenOffice binaries on some other place?

I noticed Apache open office is no longer listed as a selection at bitwise.

The developer in charge of compiling Open Office is not doing it currently so it and Injoy Firewall have been removed from the store.
