Title: OS2World - running a little slow for anyone else?
Post by: Dariusz Piatkowski on September 06, 2025, 10:51:23 pm
...just the last couple of days, as best as I can tell, there is a noticeable delay in getting page updates, has anyone else noticed that as well?

Hello

I think I notice this from Thursday. Today I'm also experiencing this delay. I will check the logs and ask the server team.

Regards

Slowed down again, though not as slow as previously. About 10 seconds to refresh this page. When I posted earlier it was close to instant.

Terrible slow now. SM most of the time says something like 'waiting on TLS handshake' or simply waiting on os2world.com.

Yes, there are issues.
We think that we are getting hit by too many bots. We are still looking what can be done.

Hi Martin

Site seems to be loading much faster this evening but I notice the Forums "latest posts" section is missing from the home page.

I find the speed varies. An hour ago it was slow, fast now. Also the RSS Feeds Forum is not a link like the other RSS feeds as well as Pete pointed out, the missing latest posts section missing.

Hello
Site seems to be loading much faster this evening but I notice the Forums "latest posts" section is missing from the home page.

I'm trying different things to see if there is something breaking the PHP on the server.
The server is fine now, I'm enabling the "Latest Forum Post" back just to do some "trial and error".

Regards

The RSS feeds are kind of weird since some time ago. It is working because the news get posted to Warp Groups.io mailing list, but I don't know why they look weird.

Most of you should now experience significantly more stable access to the server.

Over the past period, the server has been experiencing a prolonged volume of malformed PHP requests, which gradually overwhelmed PHP-FPM and caused intermittent crashes.

As an immediate mitigation, traffic originating from China has been temporarily region-blocked, as the bulk of this traffic was traced there. Since applying this block, server stability has improved.

We will continue to monitor the situation and implement further protections as needed.

in february the access to the forum pages is getting harder for me (my home connection works good), I succeed to open a forum page once in many attempts, mostly ending with the alert "server is not responding"

Here it varies. Yesterday the site just timed out. Today it is working well so far.

Here, about an hour ago it timed out. Now it seems fine. Just about every time I try to visit so far this year it seems very slow to respond or times out, then sometime later is OK. I have also seen where the page comes up, but the forum section does not show (it's blank). Very strange behavior.

Hello

Yes, we are experiencing some problems with the OS2World server. We are doing some work migrating some server stuff that is going to take a couple of weeks (I guess).

Hello Martin!

I am wondering, is there some ongoing work still being done?

Reason for asking: the last 2-3 days trying to get to the forum has been very spotty...tracerte consistently (for me) shows the following:

If you are talking about it taking up to a minute or more for the page to load then yes. Sometimes it takes over five minutes.

Long story short is that the old server is currently being phased out and it's been running 24/7 since 2012 and it's time to retire it and it's starting to show significant signs of hardware issues. Also, the OS is steady patchworks over the years as well and isn't helping. We've moved the forum into it's on sub-domain running currently in it's own vps annd later on this week we'll be moving both the full main site including the wiki and as well os2games site.

Just to let you know. These days we also had been hit by some DDoS  attacks.
We are also checking what else can we do.

Well, the issue that we have had has been ddos for quite a while and ongoing for several month back and forth and just recently we've been dealing with a lot of SYN flooding and as well recently with massive amount of HTTP flooding as well once we cut of the SYN flooding. So having 2k - 5k users online on the forum was really to slow the server and then dump in loads of SYN ack requests... does the trick.

Code: [Select]
netstat -s | grep -i syn
    202740 SYN cookies sent
    433510 SYN cookies received
    262994 invalid SYN cookies received
228178 resets received for embryonic SYN_RECV sockets
53117722 SYNs to LISTEN sockets dropped
    TCPSYNChallenge: 172
    TCPSynRetrans: 3398945
    TCPACKSkippedSynRecv: 4699
