Title: eCenter button image
Post by: xynixme on September 27, 2019, 12:37:58 am
Is the eCenter button image an image file or an embedded resource?

The eCenter/XCenter button image is a bitmap resource (number 128 ) attached to 'xwpres.dll'.

Thanks. I've extracted it, to possibly use the usual, known eCenter button image for xCenter. The extracted eCenter bitmap appears to be either damaged or weirdly wrapped, but so far I've only stripped bytes before the bitmap's header and haven't looked at the back end yet. After a quick fix it's good enough already, albeit not pixel-perfect.

Don't bother with that. Go to http://svn.netlabs.org/repos/xworkplace/branches/branch-1-0/ecs/grafx/ where you'll find 'ecslogo.bmp'  and 'ecsminilogo.bmp'. I believe you need the mini version.
Title: eCenter/xcenter: difference?
Post by: Adrian on December 29, 2025, 07:18:00 pm
Hi,

What's the difference between the OS/2 Warp 4 ecenter and the ArcaOS xcenter?
When I remove the warpin packages for xworkplace then xcenter is also gone.
When you want to use a wifi connection, this is more difficult because the xcenter widget is of course also gone.
The same for unmounting external drives.
Object desktop has no function for wifi connections or removeable drives.
Or is it possible to get the old ecenter back?

The same thing the XWLAN widget does integrated in xcenter handles the stand alone program wlanstat. It get installed automatically with any xwlan package. So for WLAN / WiFi connections xcenter is not really needed.

Hello

I don't fully remember this, but I believe that eCenter was just a rebranded xCenter. And xCenter is part of XWorkplace, so xWorkplace should not be removed.

Adrian, what OS/2 version are you using? IBM, eComStation or ArcaOS?

Is there any way eCenter has something better that xCenter? Because I think that with the latest version of XWorkplace (that has xCenter) we should be fine.

Correct me if I'm wrong please.

Under the covers everything is XWorkplace.  There are two versions Full and Lite.  The Lite version omits some features at compile time.  Other features are available, but not enabled for a default install.

The rest is branding.  This includes naming changes and changes to GUI elements.

There's eWorkplace which is the branded version that came with eComStation. Since in the eComStation world, everything began with an e, the XWorkplace XCenter got renamed to the eCenter

There's the ArcaOS Desktop which is the Arca Noae branded version of xWorkplace Lite.  Arca Noae chose to call the XCenter the XCenter.  Perhaps calling it the ArcaOS Center did not read so well?

Internally the source code for all of these is essentially the same.  Obviously eWorkplace/eCenter omits defect fixes and feature enhancements available in current versions of XWorkplace and the ArcaOS Desktop.

Hi Martin,

I'm using ArcaOS 5.1.1 on a Lenovo T60 laptop.
In the past, I have installed the complete version of workplace, and sometimes strange things happen.
Now I have increased the SSD disk size and partitions, it is more clear and ArcaOS works fine.

Gras,
Adrian
