Title: ODIN Revisited
Post by: Martin Iturbide on June 14, 2019, 06:59:27 pm
Hi

Just checking some other thread it makes me wonder if we should try to revisit some of the old Windows 32bits programs that used to run on ODIN and check how are they running today. Maybe today testing those apps can be easier with Virtual Machines, back on the early days of ODIN,  I remember I used to test some Windows apps with more constrains since I didn't want to screw up my OS/2 working configuration on real hardware and had bandwith limitations to download software.

Today I tried RealPlayer 8 (http://ftp.recompile.se/pub/os/windows/rp8-setup.exe), to remember the old days, maybe it is not very useful now. But it was fun to see that the installer already worked, and also the program. I just run "pe rp8-setup.exe" and it installed, "pe realplayer.exe" to run the software.

I also remember that mirc used to work, but I didn't have the old ones, I tried the latest v7.55. It also installed, but it crashed with some error when I tried to run it.

Maybe it can be interesting to revisit some old Win32bits games.

Any Win32bits software that you remember that used to work, or maybe that you still use?

Regards

I have to admit I am using the Odin install from my old Warp 4.52 CP install (I just copied the Odin directory across to my Ryzen box).

That being said I have no problem running IrfanView (picture editing) and Photofilter7 (photo editing).  I used to have a few others running but haven't tried them in over 12 months.

For me its pretty awesome ODIN can run Office 97 programs from the CD (with errors regarding file paths, which is exactly the same when running thrm on Windows directly off the CD), though installing them is a different matter (the setup.exe program is a 16bit stub so you need to use acmsetup.exe but that fails with setup unable  to write files to the installation directory after a short while)  :(

The Windows XP version of solitaire runs, though the red cards are rendered black so it is difficult to play.

On the plus side, the 32 bit version of SkiFree runs like a champ  :D

Do you think it will be a good idea to try to revive the "Odin Compatible Application" database? (Here it is an archived link (http://web.archive.org/web/20000823231343/http://odin.netlabs.org/MiscApplications.phtml)), but doing it on a Wiki, since it is the only easy to use technology I know :)

Hi

I started to check some of the Odin articles and information about running apps.

I would like to run Quake III Arena (https://archive.org/details/QuakeIiiArenaDemo) with Odin. I'm reading this HowTo (http://web.archive.org/web/20050424120049/http://antrophos.ath.cx:80/~shai/quake3os2/quake3os2howto.txt), but he points to some Mesa3D files I can not found. (mesa3d-31.zip, mesa3d-51.zip  (http://web.archive.org/web/20050424120023/http://antrophos.ath.cx/~shai/quake3os2/files/)).

If someone knows or remember something on how to run Quake III Arena with Odin, please let me know.

Regards

I still use from time to time "Compare It" to look for differences between files. For me it is better than our native GFC.

BTW: I like KDiff3 (http://trac.netlabs.org/qtapps/wiki/QT4%20Development) (for OS/2) much more than any Windows app. I use it since it was ported to OS/2 instead of GFC, which I used previously.

See also the eCSoft/2 page (https://ecsoft2.org/kdiff3).

I have been using vim on OS/2 with diffutils.  I see KDiff3 is easier to read and will use it as my GUI alternative.  Thanks for the tip.

Hi there

I tried to do something on the wiki. I made it table like, with only games for the moment:
- https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Odin_Compatible_Applications (https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Odin_Compatible_Applications)

Sadly, I don't have the full netlabs odin database, only the "snapshots" from archive.org.

What it would be great is try to update the table testing those games withe latest ArcaOS and Odin version. You all are free to post any testing on this thread and I offer myself to go updating the wiki.

getaddrinfo() was added for IPv6.  It sounds like Odin probably doesn't grok IPv6 yet :(.

OS/2, or rather libc, has only recently got getaddrinfo(), which of course only supports IPv4 on OS/2. Eventually Odin will be rebuilt and hopefully support it.

Have people completely abandoned ODIN development or is there still someone maintaining the project? WINE has gone a long way as well as ReactOS during last years. I am wondering if it would be possible to make ODIN also more up to date with current software.

But the problem must usually be too few developers for OS/2 in general. For example, the only FileZilla built I was able to find is at alpha stage and very unusable. And the OS/2 version of Gimp is a very ancient version with very limited functionality.

Odin is pretty well abandoned. Bitwise has done the most recent work I believe. That was to support various programs. Java and Flash mainly, with, IIRC, Java being the Windows version recompiled against Odin and the Flash wrapper also Odin based.

Java is pretty high up the list to port. Might be next if QT is finished and sponsoring found- So it might well be that for a new Java Odin will get some updates as well. Dmitry might shed some light on that because he would likely be the one who does the porting.

Nice. After checking your picture I also tried it with Odin 0.9.0 and with the latest IrfanView 4.53 32bits version. It seems to run very good.

I was wondering if it's possible to make SumatraPDF to work with ODIN. It complained about missing DLLs. I downloaded some versions of them from dll-files.com. There are no error messages anymore but the program still doesn't start. It may require specific versions of those DLLs (msvcrt.dll for example).

Sorry, I learned a long time ago that you can't just add/use windows DLLs to Odin - they don't work.  The OS/2 DLLs are LX while the Win DLLs are ME.

That was what pe2lx.exe was for. Seems to have been renamed to xx2lx.exe. Run with no parameters to see how to use.
There was also win2k.sys which worked like a PE loader, could run Win32 programs by clicking on them and it would convert and load the DLLs, even DLL's with long names. It has also been renamed to xx2k.sys or such and isn't really recommended to use. It could load other stuff too IIRC.

Hi Dave,

Am I reading that right by using xx2lx.exe I can convert win 95/98 DLLs to ones that work with Odin or am I missing something?

Actually, I might be mis-remembering. It's been a long time but looking at my old Odin install, I just copied the Win32 DLLs to \odin\system32 and rereading the documentation, xx2lx was for converting the whole program to LX.

Hi

I also remember that some for some programs to run with some version of Odin, you will have to grab some DLLs from Windows and convert them to LX. I used to call it "odinizing the files". But not all Windows DLLs worked, and I think it also depended on the DLL version. I guess I stopped doing that with the "xx2k.sys" on boot but I can not recall correctly.

Hi

Something got broken on the bridge that connects the main site (joomla) with the wiki (MediaWiki). I will need to make it manual for newer users.  It is hard to fix this since the JFusion script project (https://github.com/jfusion) were abandon and now the newer versions of SMFoum and MediaWiki broked.

John, I will write you to your registered email and set a password for the OS2world wiki.

FYI: I update the news from time to time on Zophar's Domain (https://www.zophar.net) (Emulation site) and Wine 5.16 (dev release) for Linux was released on August 28, 2020. So Wine is still getting updates.

- IrfanView 4.6.7 (https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php?title=IrfanView) (2024-04-05) also includes in the wiki and hobbes. Photo viewer.

I tried PhotoFiltre 7.2.1 (https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php?title=PhotoFiltre_7) but it crashed on me when I try to open a picture. (https://www.photofiltre-studio.com/utils/pf7-en-7.2.1.zip)

While at first it seems to work, starting a game,it offers a tutorial which is empty, then the cards are dealt and vanish. It's been a long time since I've played rummy but pretty sure you can look at your hand.

Searching the wayback machine later I found that they migrated to Java and changed the name of the game to RRRumy (I guess to avoid trademark problems). I tested the Java app and work for us. The tiles shows up and seems more playable.
I uploaded it to hobbes for people that like to play it: https://hobbesarchive.com/Home/Download?path=/Hobbes/pub/java/games/board/RRRumy_7-3-4.zip

It is like the board game Rummikub, and I had played it. So I guess Rummy was the original cards game and Rummikub is the ones with tiles.

Thanks.

I still dream of an MS Office 95 or 97, 2000 with a PM Titlebar. The installation may work, but the programs crash, the worst is Word. Schedule+ runs pretty well and Excel can also be started but does not last long. Updates for Odin would be very nice.

Regards

You might have already seen some of my posts about me getting back to using OS/2 now that I'm retired. I will start working on small C programs on OS/2 but I need to know what would be the best compiler to use with the expectation that once I get used to writing programs for OS/2 again I want to help out with projects such as ODIN to hopefully work with the WINE group that makes it so that Windows apps runs on Linux and other version of UNIX.

Why re-invent the wheel when they have done most of the work already?

If we could get Windows games running on OS/2 and have them running better and faster than on Windows or at least close to as good then people that are interested in alternate OSs would get more interested in OS/2 and hopefully get more life (money) into OS/2 so that your company makes more money and we have more people using OS/2 which would be good for all of us that LOVE OS/2 and feel that the world in OS/2 is pretty small even compared to the open source version of BeOS (Haiku) is. Their message board is a LOT more active than this one and anything that can be done to get this board and this OS/2 more used and active would be a good thing.

Ultimately we NEED a 64 bit version of an operating system that works and feels like OS/2 that can run 64-bit, 32-bit, 16-bit and even 8-bit DOS programs (GAMES!!! GAMES!!! GAMES!!!) to draw more interest and keep OS/2 living after 32 bit computers die out or get too expensive.

I KNOW that people have tried that before and those attempts died out. But OS/2 WILL die out TOO if something isn't done to create a 64-bit version of OS/2 that can run all the OS/2 programs it can run now, the Windows programs it can run now, and the DOS programs it can run now.

Life either evolves or it dies out. Just ask all of the different hominids (human like creatures) that existed on this earth and died out with homo sapiens being the last "humanoid" creatures still on this earth and all the other animals that have gone extinct. I don't think anyone wants that for OS/2.

If you want to write programs for OS/2 natively (not port code). then use OpenWatcom compiler. If you want to port Linux code to OS/2 use the GCC compiler and here for Paul Smedley his development environment.
