Wordperfect is/was (and is still today!) an excellent word processing program ... I fell out of my chair the first time I hit "reveal codes", and saw what formatting was being applied to my text, and I could fix that formatting directly.
Sadly, over the years, vendors "improve" a software application, and features that we rely on slowly disappear, being replaced with stuff that someone else decides is important, but which you now find missing or changed beyond usefulness. The version parade marches on, and everyone forces you to march with it.
You just want to pick an application version number, and stop time in its tracks, so you can keep using it forever. While, of course, making use of modern stuff ...
Luckily, I'm still running that old WP for DOS, in a VM, right alongside one or more OS/2 (ArcaOS) VM's, and alongside a mainframe VM, and more ... all on one machine. Modern browsers and x64 apps also available. AToF (over in the virtualization sub-forum of this site) allows it, and I've recaptured the value of my old WP for DOS license, still being used today, many decades later.
As long as we can keep the actual bits around (*preserve* those old programs), we can bring them back to life and make them usable again.
So, AToF a laptop or desktop, and bring up Wordperfect (or whatever) as you remembered it, and use it again today! And in the same machine, AI that golf program as well, and run it in OS/2 ... don't wait for someone else to get around to it.
I actually paid for an extra Word Perfect Office for Windows license just to install it on my work computer (I was a programmer/systems analyst and they didn't stop me from doing that. That is what I used (except I used Excel) _instead of MS Word IMperfect_ and for things I shared I saved in Docx format but everything else was in WP format. I even kept running the OLD version of WP that did NOT have Visual Basic which I learned how to program in for work but HATED IT and for my own WP files I used WP script LOVED IT as it allowed me to automate a lot easier than VB did. The same with Lotus 1-2-3 scripting language which I ALSO bought a license for my work computer and just used Excel for work and ONLY a few files for myself.
I started using WP with Word Perfect 5.0 for DOS and LOVED (and still LOVE) Reveal Codes because if something is messed up, I could always know that there was a code that I could SEE which was causing the problems. I just deleted or fixed the code and things were great. I think Word finally includes Reveal Codes but I don't use it and never will again now that I'm retired.
There are MANY things in Word Perfect that are better than Word, especially when it still had WP scripting language but even still has MANY things that make it better. I'm not a Lemming or a sheep that follows what other people do. I do what works best for me and makes me the happiest. OS/2, Word Perfect (with WP scripting) and Lotus 1-2-3 and Links LS Golf which I'm running on a 2004 four iMac with Mac OS X 10.4 but Links LS is running in a VM inside of Mac OS 9.2 classic and runs really well.
Once I get Arca Naoe installed then I'm going to install the DOS version of Links LS which is newer than the last version of the Mac version of Links LS (I know because I bought every non-Microsoft version of Links LS. Plus I'm moving from Apple back to OS/2 and once I get everything setup, my Apple computer will be shutdown and put back in its box and put into my closet.
