I was trying to remember the setting for individual domains. Thanks
Changed my user.js to
Code: [Select]
user_pref("general.useragent.override.os2world.com","OS2zilla/5.0 (OS/2; Warp 4.5 x86_64; rv:128.0) Gecko/20100101 SeaMonkey/2.53.23");and here I am. about: shows the original UA

HELP!  As a long time user, but not a tech wiz I need some helpful directions in simple steps how to get my firefox to view the OS/2 world site.  I can do it through Windows, but want to be able to use my Arca 5.2 box to keep up.  I see a lot of information, but have no understanding of how to actually get my Arca Firefox to do this .  Help please

Hi Matt. First you need to find your profile. Go to about:support (type it in the address bar).
Close to the top is a blue column, Application Basics. About 6 lines down there is Profile Directory, besides this, in the grey area, is an Open Directory button. Click this and your profile folder will open. You need to create a file in this folder called user.js and paste the user_pref line referenced a couple of messages up into user.js, save it and restart FF and test.
If you prefer the cmd line, your profile is likely under X:\home, look in your config.sys for the SET MOZILLA_HOME line which should point at the root of your profile directory with your profile under Mozilla\Firefox

  • start Firefox
  • in the URL bar enter: "about:support" (without the quotes)
  • in the page that opens, find the "User Agent", the string on the right shows you the current US (User Agent) string which you can copy or note down in case something goes wrong
  • open a new tab
  • in the URL bar, enter: "about:config" (without the quotes)
  • press the "I'll be careful, I promise" button (note that you can screw up correct operation if you modify any arbitary setting)
  • you will be presented with a whole lot of setting strings and there values
  • right click in that window, select "New" and then "String"
  • as the "Preference Name", enter "general.useragent.override" (without the quotes) and hit OK
  • in the string entry field that then displays, paste this string: "OS2zilla/5.0 (OS/2; Warp 4.5 x86_64; rv:128.0) Gecko/20100101 SeaMonkey/2.53.23" (without the quotes) and hit OK
  • restart Firefox
That should hopefully do. Note that if you accidentally create a new Preference as in 9) and want to delete it, the only way to do so is to delete that new Preference from the "prefs.js" file which you will find in your Firefox profile. In short: it is easier to add something than to delete it ...

    .....
  • as the "Preference Name", enter "general.useragent.override" (without the quotes) and hit OK
....
  • restart Firefox

All that is perfectly summarized by Lars. Thanks. Only thing I would suggest is instead this line above use
Code: [Select]
"general.useragent.override.os2world.com" instead. So the override is limited to os2world.com.

Of course you can use PrefBar and manage and select different UAs manually from the drop-down box. HTH

A bit of poking about indicates that default support for site specific overrides was turned off a while ago.  However, it appears that the code is still present and can be enabled with

  general.useragent.site_specific_overrides

which is enabled by default in our builds.

So as it turns out the site specific setting no longer works in our FF.

To Steven's point, the profile option is still there, but regardless what you set it to, it doesn't seem to be used by FF.

Yes, it doesn't seem to have ""resource://gre/modules/UserAgentOverrides.jsm" in nsBrowserGlue.jsm while it is in nsSuiteGlue.js.
The preference has this in the source,
Code: [Select]
// This pref exists only for testing purposes. In order to disable all
// overrides by default, don't initialize UserAgentOverrides.jsm.
pref("general.useragent.site_specific_overrides", true);
I've added the resource to nsBrowserGlue.jsm and am compiling FF to see if it enables it.
Note, Browser=FF, Suite=SM and Mail=TB in the source
Edit: fix typo

Well that change didn't help. Have to investigate more.

What did work here, using a new profile, was generally over riding the UA with,
Code: [Select]
user_pref("general.useragent.override","OS2zilla/5.0 (OS/2; Warp 4.5 x86_64; rv:128.0) Gecko/20100101 SeaMonkey/2.53.23");
in my user.js
Logging in and then removing the preference, I could still get by anubis. Guess the cookie holding my login was good enough for future logins.

Found.
I first added  OS2zilla/5.0 (OS/2; Warp 4.5 x86_64; rv:128.0)  but forgot to suppress Mozilla/5.0 (OS/2; OS/2 i386) !
After support of the mozilla/5.0 agent, it goes trhough the verification step without checking image

I've found a few sites where the warpzilla UA gets me by the "checking if you are human" stuff. OTOH, one of my banks stopped loading until I reverted SM to its default UA. It's nice having user agent switcher installed in SM.
I do note that Dooble, in Settings-->Web, you can now set  different user agents depending on Domain.
