Title: eCS Demo onto SD card?
Post by: BigWarpGuy on 2008.03.11, 00:53:10

Can one install the eCS demo onto an sd card and use it to boot eCS on the EEE PC?

Id assume its possible, but the DemoCD is very outdated, and more or less useless on any hardware purchased in the last 3 years. You would probably fare better with a 2.0RC4 image on a SD card :\

I do not have a software subscription. The demo cd is free. I thought it would neat to try eCS on the EEE PC just to see if it would work. It would give people a chance to try eCS without having to install it or buy a software subscription.  ;D

Give it a shot, sure :) But they really, REALLY need to think about keeping the DemoCD updated :\ It really is useless as it is right now.

The date on the demo is 2005. I agree, they should update it.

I agree regarding the need for update.

On the other hand, I think it's not a bad idea to wait until you have something stable, like the long-anticipated final 2.0 (GA). Simple reason is that with a Demo CD after all, you want to leave a good impression, don't you? So having a demo CD that crashes on bootup due to ACPI for example... ;) Ouch. You cannot afford to have something like this. I'm pretty sure they won't miss on updating the demo cd once it makes sense.

But again - sigh - this is Mensys: A simple update/status notice like "BTW: The DemoCD will be updated to the 2.0 code level as soon as the remaining top stability issues are solved" (or even less details!) would please the community and give some kind of visibility.
Some things can be sooooo easy. All it takes is a person being dedicated to only outside PR for eCS and keeping folks in the loop so they don't get the impression of being abandoned...

regards
Thomas

RIght, but along with that good impression is the miserable impression a LiveCD that wont work on ANY new hardware will leave the user because, hey, its all they have. And three years? Come on, thats unforgivable.
