Title: Alt+F2, F3, F4 Internal error on eCS 2.1
Post by: miturbide on 2011.06.14, 16:05:38
Hi

I'm using eCS 2.1 - AHCI enabled on a Intel i5 desktop machine, 6GB RAM. It is a dual boot system with Windows 7. Using Windows 7 Boot Manager.

When I run eComStation 2.1 it works fine. The system is stable.
When I boot and press Alt+F1 it runs fine and show the menu.
But if I press Alt+F2, F3 or F4 on boot, I get an internal processing error that is showed on the attached picture.

Does anybody has found this problem with eComStation 2.1, or any other version?  Any ideas, tips, pointers?

OS/2 Warp Unleashed pages 101/102 have some explanation on Recovery and Choices.

Is it possible to use the keys "V" instead of "F3" and "M" instead of "F4"?

Is \OS2\BOOT\ALTF1.CMD present and correct?

Is \OS2\BOOT\CONFIG.X present and correct?

Wim.

Thanks Wim for you reply

\OS2\BOOT\ALTF1.CMD  is present and looks correct.
\OS2\BOOT\CONFIG.X is also present and looks fine.

If I boot with Alt+F1 it works, shows the menu- F2 will run the command prompt mode.

The problem remains with Alt+F2, Alt+F3 and Alt+F4. The use of keys like Alt+V or Alt+M does not work, it have me the same error.

But I notice the error that goes weirder. If I press any key (Ctrl, or shifl, or alt.. and I guess any other) before the boot logo, it shows me this error.

I opened a ticket on eComStation support site:

I hope they had some idea.

Hi Martin

I'm running eCS2.0GA and on my last boot I tried ALT-F2

This stops the boot process completely here - no messages at all and no boot.

Looks like something is screwed with eCS2.0 and 2.1

With  ECS 2.0 on my ASUS P4B533 motherboard it works quite well.

Alt+F1 gives me the menu with recovery choices.
Alt+F2 displays each device driver while it is loaded.
Alt+F3 gives me both.

I have a PS/2 keyboard attached. Do you have a USB keyboard attached?

Doubtful.

I'll boot my eCS2.0RC6a installation sometime today and see if the problem goes back that far.

If not I would guess that the problem could have been introduced with the 14.105 kernel files introduced with eCS2.1 - I retrofitted the 105 kernel to my eCS2.0GA installation but have not changed those files in my RC6a installation.

Hi wimpie

Well, you may want to try the kernel files supplied with eCS2.1 and see if it stops working.

Hi Martin

ALT+F2  seems to be working fine on my RC6a installation.

It also works fine with the kernel 14.105 files supplied with eCS2.1

When I tested this I was also testing acpi. When using the /APIC switch my system fails to boot and I was trying to identify where it stopped. When using the /PIC switch the ALT+F2 problem does not exist so I'm guessing that here the problem (as with most other eCS systems) is ACPI related.

What ACPI switches are you using?

Thanks for the tip Peter.

I'm using "PSD=ACPI.PSD /SMP /Q"

If I disabled /SMP mode Alt+F4 and other started working correctly.

The problem is on ACPI SMP mode.

Hi Martin

I did not know there was a /Q switch - not mentioned in the docs.

I always try /Q on any driver ;)  In this case it worked.

I really hate showing messages on boot once eCS is stable on a system.

I wonder if anybody else has this problem with eCS 2.1 running "PSD=ACPI.PSD /SMP".

It is common when using ACPI with SMP, or it just my hardware configuration? or is it something with Windows 7 Boot Manager?
