Title: Virtual Box "hang" installing eCs 2.0 in Linux
Post by: klipp on 2009.09.01, 19:45:52
Using VirtualBox OSE in Linux when installing eCs 2.0 it hangs when "Loading KBDBASE.SYS"!  Anybody have either a solution for this or a "work-around"?

thanks, klipp

Hi

Under which hardware are you running VirtualBox ?

Remember that "According to VirtualBox Documentation OS/2 MCP2 was report to work stable but it requires VT-x hardware virtualization support. That means that your computer had to be modern enought to have that feature. "

Do you have that VT-x hardware virtualization support enabled ?

I will also apreciate if you also collaborate with your experience (once you solve your problems) inside the Virtual Machine wiki page.

as far as I remember, I had that same problem when trying to run a pre-RC6 version of eCS in VitualBox on Windows XP.
In my case, VT-x was available but disabled in the BIOS... and pre-RC6 versions had problems.

So to be on the safe side:
- use eCS 2.0 rc6 (or ~6a, 7...), enter the preboot menu and checkmark the "inside virtual machine" option
- make sure your machine has a VT-x hardware virtualization feature (and that it's turned on)

Which version of eCS 2.0 are you using?
As for the VBox OSE Linux version - I don't recall by heart - has it support for hardware virtualization at all?

Thomas

I'm using eCs silver release #2, and RC6a -- can't get either off the ground. VT-x is enabled and "inside virtual machine" option is enabled. Supposedly VT-x hardware virtualization is no longer a requirement, but a plus if available (according to Sun's VBox forum). These latest Linux versions (ose) have eCs configuration an option when setting up the virtuar box parameters, and VT-x is automatically checked (and can't be unchecked) in the VBox settings.

I give up for tonight! Thanks warpcafe & miturbide for the help

okay. Let me walk thru the VBox settings that work for me here, I'll try to attach some screenshots.
Unfortunately, for the eCS install, I don't remember what I exactly did in the preboot menus options, but AFAIK I was playing safe on the initial install (no USB, network, shared folders, blabla...) and did that later once eCS was installed and running. (To circumvent the drawbacks of not having neither shared folders nor USB, I created floppy images with the eCS key on it)

Hopefully I'll find some time today to gather the information.
What version of VBox OSE are you using, BTW?

Regards,
Thomas

I'm using Virtual Box ver 2.0.2_ose and running it in Mandriva 2009. I've tried loading both RC-6a and the "Silver Edition #2" with the same results.

Another point warpcafe, I'm testing the Silver edition on 5 different boxes, one is an "antuque" the other four fairly new. None of these boxes have an option in the BIOS to enable VT-x, if that is truly a requirement then we are probably wasting our time.

Thanks again   klipp

that reminds me that when I was looking at my VBox settings, there wasn't anything "obvious" about the state of VT-x... until I actually discovered that it was turned off in the BIOS by some "corporate override" from our local IT guys.
You should have at least a multicore machine. That is more or less an indicator that any kind of hardware virtualization exists. Then, in the BIOS, don't look for "VT-x"... just to make sure: It is actually called something like "hardware virtualization feature" or similar.

Hope this helps, however will check my settings as promised once I return home.

Cheers,
Thomas

I think I'm "dead in the weeds" warpcafe, none of the boxes are multi-core!

again, thanks for you're help

Well, to be honest, it doesn't mean that multicore is required to have HW-virtualization.
It's only a "rough" indicator to see what generation your processor is to see if it is likely that it's got any HW-virtualization feature with it or not. (see also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VT-x (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VT-x) for details )

I have attached screenshots of my VBox settings for eCS 2.0 RC6.
(It's not an "OSE" version and running on Win XP SP2)

ehh... just to make sure:
I'm not running XP in VBox, but rather running VBox on XP!

Is OS/2 version of VirtualBox supporting VT-X as well?

I know there is a checkbox, but is this really working under OS2?

as far as I remember: No.
I might be mistaken here however... unfortuntely I can't look up the information required since I can't open the PDF file from the WSE2008 presentation that Thorolf gave on VBox OSE on eCS (eCS as host). That PDF is here: http://wse2008.warpevents.eu/uploads/tx_wseevents/wse2008_all09_virtual_box.pdf (http://wse2008.warpevents.eu/uploads/tx_wseevents/wse2008_all09_virtual_box.pdf)

Thank god we have the warpevents.eu archive ;)

Hhmmm, unfortunately VT-x is not supported...
Will have to find a new excuse why to use eCS on CoreDuo machine :-\
