1. S.M.A.C.K. for OS/2? |
|
|
| I heard good things about SMACK ( a label program for OS/2). I bought/ordered it at http://www.bmtmicro.com . I received an e-mail with an link/ftp link to download it. I downloaded it and installed it to my desktop. It is not easy to use. It crashed a couple of times (just the program and not Warp). The developers site at BMTMicro is one for selling labels but does not show anything about SMACK. There is a link there that connects to a site with a similar program but it is only for Windoze. Does anyone know more about this? Is there another site for it? PS It would be nice if the author/programmer would open source it.

C-Side is for cd labels. I downloaded and registered it (worth the price). It takes a little 'adjusting' for each different sheet of labels but pretty easy to use. SMACK does different types of labels (ie; address), and other types of 'labels' (ie; business cards, etc). I have tried SMACK and it seems unstable. It works kinda well. I am looking for the site that has information on it.

| Hmm. would you really need a full fledge labeling software for that? I usually use either StarOffice or SmartSuite for that. If you just need a few labels copy & paste works out. If it's larger volumes of address labels you can link to a database or import a text file with the addresses and get it out right. There is nothing worse to have to work with a unstable program when you're trying to do software serious and it just have to work. /Kim |

I have Star Office for OS/2. I use it for address labels, business cards (I put photos on them as 'collector' cards )and other labels. I use IBM Works to write and print letters. I thought it would be neat to try SMACK for OS/2. When I found out that the link/developers web site no longer mentions OS/2 or SMACK, I thought I ask around about it to see if others knew more about it. I believe it was advertised at http://www.os2ss.com .

| It would nice if the person who created C-Side did something similar for other labels. ie; E-Side - for envelopes B-Side - for business cards (BC-Side?) L-Side - for labels M-Side - for VHS movie labels

I had sent an e-mail to the person who create C-Side (an excellent program for printing labels for cd's). He replied that he had discussed it with friends and will consider it. I hope it does as well a job on other types of labels as C-Side does with cd labels.

| I haven't tried out C-Side software, yet. I currently use a windows program to make the cd labels I need (yeah, yeah... shame on me). But, I'll give it a try and download it. /Kim |

The templates might take some adjustment since there does not seem to be any one cd label sheet design. Each company seems to make their own; one has it to one side on top and the other side on the bottom or there is one with six cd labels for mini labels so one has to print one side then the other after creating a label for it. I have made templates for some of the label sheets and have submitted it to the creator of C-Side.

| Hmm.. might be of use or I just have to make my own templates as well. But, I'm currently using CoolBeLa CD label designer that came along with a kit I bought. Well, guess that I have to download C-Side and check it out. /Kim |

I have bought labels from online, offline/stores and at computer shows/sales. Some come with software and others were just the labels. One had an cd label applicator (which only seems to work on regular cd's and not the small/mini cd's). Each company had its own layout/positions for the labels. I had to make a different template for each one but it was not difficult to do in C-Side.

Aha! You can actually make your own templates layouts within C-Side. Great I really have to download it and test it <grin> it's even hosted on the OS2 World server |

I have noticed that once you save a template, you have to close the program or not start a new cd label otherwise the template saved will end up being erased/deleted. This is not a real problem since it starts up pretty quick (especially after one registers it). Once it is saved and once the program has been restarted, The template will be there for future use. Perhaps this is a bug but C-Side is continually being developed so I have no doubt it is being worked on.
