1. Long File Name support and USB flash drives
Reply to this topic with quote Modify your message
So, I finally got my USB flash keys to work with eCS 1.1 and the latest USB drivers. I've got a Lexar 128Mb and another 64Mb, no-name. They're both working perfectly, the only problem I have is long file name support. I've got Fat32 installed, but all I'm seeing is the truncated 8.3 names. Am I doing something wrong, missing something?
Any help would be appreciated.

Mmm, these flash key's are/have been used with WinXP/2K, where the long file names are shown when they are mounted

So, I looked at this vfat2ea, if you're using it in a heterogenious environment, then you have to extract the data to EAs and then push it back to vfat every time you mount and unmount the drive. VFAT.IFS hasn't been updated for a long time and says it's still experimental/subject to crapping out. I don't even know yet if it can handle drives that are mounted after boot. There's got to be a better way.

Yes, format it to fat32 and use the fat32.ifs
But when I format to fat32 in win98 I have to use DFSEE to set the identification byte to fat32, it seems win98 does not set/use this byte to identify a partition... .. Every standard what can be sabotaged will be sabotaged in win

So are you saying that i can use fat32.ifs if I format the drive and set the bit? See because the current documentation says it doesn't support removable drives. That would lead me to believe that I'd have to mount the drive before boot and only unmount it after reboot/shutdown.

Hmm well no.. I tried it (again?) and probably I'm cunfused or something changed in win or eCS..
(I did not need DFSEE this time..)
Well sorry.. but actually its a win problem and not a eCS problem.
LFN is a shit way of win to pretent to grow up and it's even making problems in win itself (the registry is full of keys like 'PROGR~1'.. imagine what all can go wrong)..
Maybe its better to format as htfs and get a dos/win driver/program what can read(/write) hpfs..
Unfortunately.. when M$ finds out about it (all XP machines are talking to eachother and to M$, XP is spyware as we all know) they will block it in the next 'SECURITY?' update...
