1. USB Printer Driver Update? |
|
|
Is there anyone doing an upgrade or writing an USB printer driver for OS/2? (apart from what one can get if one could afford the subscription to Software Choice).

According to the Hobbes site (http://hobbes.nms.edu ), the person who wrote the usb printer driver is Jason Stefanovich. I did a web search and found an e-mail address of spam.hole@verizon.net for a person of the same name but I do not know if they are the same person (I will send him an e-mail asking him if he is the one who wrote the usb printer driver).

| He he! Why not make it easier for you and use the news article search here at OS2 World.... more than 5000 articles to search through and you actually get one hit on his name. Check this out. |

| I received an e-mail from saying that he did not write it but only posted it at http://hobbes.nmsu.edu (it shows only that he is the contact person). I have been told that the usb printer driver is only a port driver and that I needed a printer driver for my printer. Since IBM seems to have updated the printer drivers for OS/2 recently, I will check it out (hoping it is either listed or there is something that is close enough to work with it).

I have tried the new printer drivers from IBM but Epson Stylus Color 480SXU USB is not listed. It is not listed among the printers the usb printer is shown (in the readme file [?]) to support. I will have to save up so my Dads Win computer can be upgraded to Win98 so he can use it.

Isn't there any printer model close enought to match the printer? Usually there is no problem to use an couple of version older driver of a driver to a newer. I would say that you should give it a try with the closest model that you can find, you might be supriced |

I have tried OS/2 drivers for Epson Stylus Color with numbers that is close and remotely close. I have tried 440, 400, 850, etc. None seem to get any result/nothing prints. The only time I get a reaction from the printer is when I shut down the computer and turn it off; then it makes some noise (the print head moves back and forth a couple of times). It is seen by the usb printer driver (it shows it as attached) and the print job goes to the icon for the printer (one clicks on the printer icon for this printer, it shows it there for awhile and it disappears). Perhaps it could be the reason it was on sale (it should be 480sux instead of 480sxu). I will keep trying until it either works or is replaced.

| ...uhm.. I haven't found anyone that had made that printer work... the closer one is the "Epson Stylus Color 860" in the "http://www.os2world.com/usb/html/printers.html" page, but if you tell you tried that drivers and didn't work thats bad. Just trying to get more of you problem, are you sure that your USB devices are working fine under OS/2, can you try it with a mouse, and posible other USB printer. ? Im not sure if that printer will work if there doens't have a OS/2 printer driver. Martin |

I will give the Epson OS/2 drivers for the 860, 880 and the 900 a try. I have not (IIRC) tried the drivers for these, yet but I will. Thanks for the information.

| I tried the 900 driver but nothing happens. I tried the 860 driver. It draws in the paper and the printer moves likes its going to print but then does a series of jerkey movements like it is experience a seizure. It does this until I either unplug the usb cable to shutdown the computer. The 860 driver has caused it to have more movement than it did since it was bought. I have yet to try the 880 driver. I have tried to download the epomni3.exe and epomni4.exe driver from IBM but have had problems with it when it started to expand. The 880 is not listed with the omnnien.exe or the omnni.exe driver (IIRC). PS Since there is an universal video driver (SDD/2) and an audio driver, it would be neat if there was a universal printer driver.

| Getting to a generic printer driver would be neat. At least this was available if you look back on the old dot printers. There was always a generic driver available so one at least could print out something. But for the all features a true vendor driver was needed. I think it just sounds a bit to hard to create a universal printer driver, or? |

| I have totally given up on the Epson Stylus Color 480SXU USB printer. I have tried the different drivers that seem to come close. One caused the printer to take the paper in as to print on it but ended up having the printer head moving jerkily back and forth (like it was having a seizure of some type). Another caused the paper after paper to move through the printer without anything being printed except a line or two of giberish on one or two of the many sheets that it moved through it (it stopped when the paper ran out or I unplugged the USB cable). I will check the printer list before buying another printer; USB, IEEE or parallal. Oh well, live and learn. PS When my Dad bought it (the 480SXU), there was no mention of which Win version it needed. My Dad has a Win95 computer. It was on sale for $49. It was when we tried to install the driver when we found it needed Win98. Neither of us wanted to spend the money on the upgrade. I tried it on my computer (without success). The store we bought it at edited the sign showing that it needs at least Win98.
