1. eCS 1.1 on a Thinkpad T21? |
|
|
I ordered a factory refurbished Thinkpad T21. I ordred the mem upgrade; from 128 to 256. It comes with Win98 but I will be installing eCS 1.1 on it. Are there any special drivers that might be needed? Are there any problems that might occur with installing eCS 1.1 onto it?

last updated at 28 Sep, 2005 09:41 (1 times) BWG,the T2x series is quite a good deal. I'm running eCS 1.1 on a T22 and I can't complain. Well, at least the infrared port gives me troubles, but that's something I can live with as my Palm syncs via serial port as well... and my cellphone ain't supported anyway. I didn't however figure out how to get the Ultrabay hot-swap working under eCS. That's the first ThinkPad I ever owned and those "advanced" features are new to me. So - in general: USB (1.1 with eCS 1.1 ga drivers) : works Sound (crystal chipset with non-recent uniaud) : works Video (with 2.x version of Snap) : works LAN: works Modem: Not sure if that "winmodem" crap does work - I have no need for it. Keys: Fn-combinations (like hibernate) work, the "ThinkPad button" however doesn't. But who cares. Touchpad works. [note added: Sorry - "TrackPoint" that is - not Touchpad...<g>] ThinkLight works (<g>). I Don't have no pcmcia cards (pccards) anymore, but the TP should be no exception to the OS/2 pcmcia "nightmare". I was told that ThinkPads behave better with pcmcia devices in OS/2 than other brands do, but that might just refer to plugging in a genuine IBM TokenRing pccard... <g> Cheers Thomas |

I got farther on the eCS 1.1 with the T21 than I ever did with the 600 but it had an cmd.exe error(?) and stopped installation. It did not have the Warpcenter on the bottom and the installation was incomplete. I used the default settings. I have never really had much luck with the Danis drivers. I will chose the IBM ones instead when I install eCS 1.1 again.

| Hi BigWarpGuy, ...that's strange. With the T22, I had the least problems installing OS/2|eCS since I started installing them on notebooks (no problems at all that's to say). Can you figure out during what phase of the install you had the cmd.exe error? What I do in general (and what I did with my eCS 11 on the T22) is: Use DANIS506.ADD, JJSCDROM, generic IBM serial port drivers, the default USB drivers suggested by installer and (!) *the VGA standard driver*. Once install is fully completed, I add SNAP afterwards. (That's merely because I have a registered SNAP, not the SE version and I didn't want to uninstall/reinstall the different SNAPs). I noticed that sometimes I had trouble running the install with different VGA drivers at the beginning (like gengradd or sdd se / snap se). OTOH, it can still be a read error on the CDs or maybe faulty RAMs...? Might be worth running the "memtest 86" tool from a bootable floppy or an "ultimate boot cd" with diagnostics to make sure that cpu, hdd and rams are ok...? Greetings (keeping fingers crossed) Thomas |

I don't know what phase the cmd.exe error occured. When I chose the IBM drivers instead of the Dani drivers, it was able to install eCS 1.1 without a problem. At least everything seems to work. I will report any problems here but eCS 1.1 did install okay.

eCS runs great. It has SDD/SNAP running on it. It does not have sound (question in multimedia section about that part) and the cpu usage is 44% even I don't have any apps running (question asked in the hardware section). I have it setup for DHCP with the builtin nic.

The site showed a T21. What I received was a T23. I did not realize it was a T23 till I tried the sound and looked down; it shows T23. I will have to install the T23 files when I do selective install. It is like getting a free upgrade.
