| Has anyone tried this yet? I think sooner or later, some of us may move on to other OS. Apple makes some pretty nice hardware and OS X is not too shabby either. In the interim time, it would be great to be able to run OS/2 and OS X on the same machine. Apparently OS/2 is supported as a "guest" under Parallels! Before I spring for a Mac Book Pro My brother managed to snag a Mac Book temporarily last week and tried it with WinXP, he said it was pretty amazing in terms of speed. I think it is probably because it's not really an emulation like VirtualPC or VMWare (is it?). You can run both WinXP and OS X simultaneously without reboot, and he said full-screen, it was as fast as any "pure" WinXP box. Boot time was only 15sec, full-screen, he said you couldn't tell it wasn't a normal Wintel laptop. If this works nicely with OS/2, it would be fantastic to be able to run it side by side with OS X without reboot. |

| I don't plan on switching off of OS/2 any time in the near future, but I do love the Apples, so I would be very interested in hearing the results... |

It will be quite a while before I stop using OS/2-eCS. If OS/2-eCS becomes unavailable, I am hoping on one of three alternatives; K42, OSFree or Voyager. If there are those installing WinXP on an Apple computer, it would interesting if one could install OS/2-eCS onto one.

| I recently bought an iMac 24" with Paralles and installed eComStation 1.2r on it. After some Problems during installation, it now works great! During installation you have to switch of the VT Engine, this is an option within Paralles. Then, after Installation, you can turn it back on. It's very impressive to see "old" OS/2 on such a big screen (1920x1200) running fast as lightening! It's runs even faster than my native OS/2 machine, which is a 2,6 GHz Pentium 4, with 1GByte RamBus RAM. Since now, all of the Programs I'm using are running smoothly. I mostly use VisualAge C++ 3.08, with MED as Editor, Papyrus as Word-Processor, VisualParadigm (java) for UML, SmartSVN (java) and Firefox. But with all my love to OS/2, I have to say, that Mac OS X is a very nice System. I like to program with Objective-C, which is a great Language. The Cocoa Framework is great, but much more complex than the IBM OpenClassLibrary. So from my point of view, switching to Mac OS X and still running OS/2 within Parallels is a good alternative. regards |

| Hmm...nice to know it works so well. Aside from a faster CPU, it also supports virtualization, so I'm hoping the speed hit will be minimal, if at all. How about the networking? (Wired or wireless...) Any problems with that? I've actually no plans to "switch" off OS/2. It's gotten to the point where it just works (well!) for everything I need it to do. My day job requires me to develop under WinXP, and I'm not exactly a computer novice I've used OS X a bit here and there and I still find quite a few things lacking for some reason... But at any rate, sooner or later, hardware needs upgrading and I'd rather pay an Apple tax than Microsoft tax. Apple hardware is hardly a sacrifice anyways! Other "alternatives" are a no-go for me. I need the applications and I need it to WORK! OSFree, K42 and Voyager sound cool, technically, and I hope they work, but I'm not holding my breath. I can't be working in a perpetual "beta" stage that a lot of Linux stuff seems to be at. |

| Networking works great in "Bridged Mode". "Shared Mode" does not work. But this is not a problem at all. Also shared Folders do not work. So you can't share your Files with the Host OS that easily. But you can transfer files by using e.g. a Samba share. Shared Clipboard works great, if you install the Parallels-Tools. At the moment there is only one thing, that is a bit disturbing: Sometimes the Mouse is lagging or bucking. This might have to do with the Amouse.sys driver I'm currently using. But after some Minutes of working you get used to it |

| Aaah one more thing I forgot. Those darn Mac's have one mouse button, right? How do you emulate the 2nd mouse button on those things? If only I could get OS X to run on my Thinkpad instead....it'd be so much easier... (Or better yet, if OS/2 development had kept going....) |

There is a section of http://forum.thinkpads.com that covers running OS X on a Thinkpad.

| Hmm...thanks, but that kind of misses my goal. I just need new hardware for OS/2, and the Mac's are nice machines. Having the ability to run OS X as a possible secondary or transition is just a bonus. Having to hack around with a questionably legal version of OS X ... I should just run Linux instead... |

You might refer to a recent thread started by yours truly... Note in the thread, and thread links, that there could be a Win4Lin possibility for SVista in the works. It is rare for Bob St. John to "think out loud" before announcing anything - So, this may have some merit. My personal opinion is that I can wait a while, and if necessary, may gravitate to the coming Freespire 2.0 for a Desktop Linux base due to its dedicated commitment to drivers, multimedia, and Win4Lin. As to "a better Ubuntu," note this recent announcement... http://www.linspire.com/linspire_letter.php When it comes to Linux, you will find that there are distro preferences for many different reasons by members of this fourm - Server, Client, Desktop, etc. An "SVista-wrapper" into eComStation with Win4Lin would not really be all that bad an option. I certainly do not desire to relinquish eCS. |

I use a bluetooth mouse with my MacBook. OS/2 works just fine with it via Parallels. For right click via the trackpad you can either hold down control while clicking the button or use a new option and turn on the "two finger" mode where you put 2 fingers on the trackpad while clicking the button. |
