| I haven't played Canasta for years - I'd love a version! I could only see the 'e' symbol card - the other two didn't appear. Any chance of a network version? (asking a lot, I know!) Thanks for taking the trouble, Stuart |

Yes, Canasta is the only card game I play - and my favourite one, too. Sadly it's not that widespread in Germany - I don't know a single person except from my family who actually plays it.

Mhh, didn't plan this yet - I want to get the computer player to do something first but I won't exclude the possibility. However networking is not part of FORTRAN/TK (Rexx/Tk and extensions and FORTRAN/TK extensions) and I don't plan to add it, so I had to code it with the OS/2 and/or Windows API (I guess I would leave out the Windows support then). Another possibility would be to improvise networking using Tcl's networking commands (should be possible thanx to TkTcl). I'll see - I have few free time and I want to get a solid program first but it would be possible.mrg Robin |

...our whole family (my relatives and my wifes relatives) all play Canasta. An we're all German. But I know that lots of people actually know Canasta - the only problem with it is, that it's a *real* card game, which means you need at least 3 players to make it fun and interesting and it takes more than 5 minutes to complete. In matters of computer use this means, that any kind of klondike or freecell will be preferred for a "quick game" break. Nevertheless, I will certainly support your work! Keep on! May the fortran be with you! Thomas |

Interesting, where do you live ? Actually there are some quite good Canasta computer games - for Windows. "Canasta" is the most popular one: http://www.canasta.net/ It runs relatively good with Odin but has some redraw issues and it's Shareware .I think I'm stuck with this Joker: Somehow looks funny. Do you know whether it is possible to use the OS/2 Solitaire (card) icon, or would there be any licensing problems? Robin |

hmm... I'm no lawyer (fortunately...) but I think that shouldn't be a problem: Basically, I can choose whatever icon I want for any application by selecting it via the "properties". However, I don't know what restrictions might apply if you (re-)distribute the icon... at least you can always just "flip" the icon horizontally (mirror) or rearrange the deck symbols and it will make a "different" icon... | I'm looking for someone who can answer a question for me about Canasta rules: When playing 2 member Canasta & one person goes out, I know the other player has to deduct the points in his hand from the melds on his board. However, what happens if that player doesn't have enough points on the board, but does have one or more canastas, and/or red threes? How do the deductions proceed then? Does he lose the 300 or 500 points of those canastas? Does he lose the point values of the red 3's? Does he have to begin removing the face card values from the cards in the canasta? I'd sure appreciate knowing this! My friend & I play a lot and this always confuses me. It's never spelled out in rules what you do when you have canastas and/or red 3's, and have exhausted points from your hand and your open melds. Thanks, Karen |

Canabis (that's how I called the game now finally has a provisional homepage at netlabs.org. It's not dead - there was a lot of development since I started this thread. Canabis is not far away from being playable. Although it wouldn't be much work to complete the easy "AI" level, I'll work on other parts of the game first. Also there is no binary release yet but of course you could build your own one if you absolutely want to.http://svn.netlabs.org/canabis Have fun. Robin |

You can add my grandmother, my mother, me, and a friend of mine (you'd not want to play with her, I can tell you :o). All Germans and located in the Ruhrgebiet. I'd like to see a copy of this game! With the elephant as a joker, of course. |

Strange, then maybe it just isn't so widespread in East Germany. I come from the Mansfelder Land and currently live in Magdeburg (both in Sachsen-Anhalt).

Yes, it's already part of the card package based on oxymorons cards mrg Robin |
