| Regarding all the fuss along with yesterdays (Jan-30) launch of Windows Vista, I suddenly had the idea of a new marketing strategy for eComStation: We need codenames (Or "names" at least) for the eCS builds. Remember all these "longhorn"s, "sharptooth"s, "chicago"s, "tiger"s, "woody"s etc. - not to mention "Warp"? Now that we most likely will have an eCS mascot (one day or another) why not give each *version* its codename instead of a dull number (or in addition to). See here: What does "look" better? What is likely to generate more mentioning? A "1.2R" release or e.g. a "1.2R ('whisper')" release? Mensys and Serenity: Feel free to keep the numbers, but why not add codenames like "whisper", "viper", "chainsaw", "lightning" or whatever... why not do a codename competition for each released build? The successful submitter will be mentioned in the releases readme file and the website. Okay, I just did a quick shot using "whisper" as codename. Seemed funny to me in contrast to "Vista". Oh, BTW - has someone already played jokes on the name of "Vista"? Back to business: Whaddaya think? |

Not to forget the "dapper drake," "breezy badger," etc.
Chainsaw? ROFL! Hm, I don't know. If my computer made a chainsaw sound, I'd rather turn it off quickly and check the fans and hard disk.
I agree with both thoughts. It's a very good marketing idea. Such a code name would probably even be more memorable than "eComStation" itself.
Yeah, I already imagined a computer seen from the T-100's view (you know, that with the HUD stuff), scanning it, displaying something like "evil operating system detected" and blowing it to bits with said quote. |

| Our local sports team is the "Banana Slugs". These fearsome creatures are about four inches long and covered with slime. http://slugweb.com/gallery.html Other teams fear "Team Slug" I hope that we can think of names that show sophistication and humor. |

| I agree with all this, however... I think that IBM continues to sell OS/2 code to Serenity Systemsis because their number of sales is relatively small and focused.I think that if that market were to suddenly, (or steadily but incrementally), start to increase in size, then IBM would revisit the whole idea and pull the plug on the deal with Serenity Systems. In other words; I think that the continuity of eCS/OS2, depends largely on the number of eCS licenses remaining modest. As long as sales of such bring in some money and does not get in the way of IBM's other plans, then we can continue to have our favourite OS and survive more or less as we do today; dwindling in number, yet growing in sophistication.![]() Of course, once Voyager gets up and running, the small market restriction will be irrelevant and appeasing IBM just won't matter any more.Just my $0.02 worth... --- ![]() |

Voyager or OSFree http://www.osfree.org or K42; any of which would be good if once they have something to replace OS/2 or eCS. It will be a while before they do and I hope eCS will be around for quite a long time. If IBM did take back OS/2 (after sales goes up enough for them to take notice), would that mean they would no longer sell OS/2 or sell it at a much higher price? Perhaps a good code name would be 'winbreaker'? |
