1. eCS 1.2 and Licence Overwrite?
Reply to this topic with quote Modify your message
I won a Thinkpad A22m. It has eCS 1.2 on it but with the donors licence on it. Does one have to install eCS 1.2 again to overwrite the licence or can one just buy the licence and only overwrite that file?

Forgive me if this has been covered elsewhere, but what is an eCS "donors license"?

Doesn't it mean the licence was registered previously by someone else, who gave machine to bigwarpguy?

Bigwarpguy, give some details please (do you have registration card, number or so?).

At Warpstock Hershey, they had giveaways and a raffle. They raffled off a desktop computer, a notebook computer, FinnSoft t-shirts and some DFSee mini-discs. I had won the notebook comptuer. It was not a new notebook computer. It was one that was donated to be raffled off at Warpstock. The previous owner had installed eCS 1.2 using his own registration/licence. When I had won the notebook computer, I was told that would have to buy my own registration/licence for eCS 1.2. My registration/licence will replace the prevous owners. I was wandering if I would have to re-install eCS 1.2 or would it be possible to just to get the new/my registration for eCS 1.2 and only overwrite the previous one with my own. I hope this clears things up (and not make it worse).

Why don't you ask this question directly to Serenity Systems

At SSi, the developer of eCS, you will get the correct answer and support !!!

When I purchase eCS 1.2, I will ask them about it. I was just wandering if there was any one who had any experience with it.

On the license, I agree with IceBear, you're best to ask Serenity. Generally I'm one to think that as long as you have a legal license for the software, then you're covered for the use of that software. But then I'm not a software lawyer, so don't go by what I say.

It may be of interest, I do seem to recall reading somewhere in (I think) the eCS license that it allows you to have it installed on both a desktop and a laptop, provided that you're only using one of your computers at a time (ie, if you're using both your desktop and laptop simultaneously, then you'd technically need 2 licenses, but if you use for example your desktop when at home, and your laptop when on the road - then you would be okay with a single license). If anyone can clarify this or if I'm incorrect on my interpretation / recollection, then feel free to correct me.

However I think there is also another issue here - whether you want to go with an eCS installation that you don't know much about, or if you want to have a "fresh" install. Whenever I've ended up with a used computer, I've prefered to wipe the hard disk clean and do a fresh install of the operating system(s) - the way I want it to be. Usually I'll set up a few partitions - for the OS and applications, and for data. Also that way I know it isn't going to be cluttered with stuff I don't want. Of course this is more of an issue with Windows machines, where there can be spyware or viruses hiding in any number of places.

Hmm... Would I be correct to guess the eCS has some sort of license enforcement that was not in REAL versions of OS/2? Otherwise, why would any of this matter?

I was thinking of overwriting it with eCS 1.1 then buy the upgrade to eCS 1.2 which is cheaper than the full version. Thanks for the information.

I like to partition the hard drive so I would not have to over write the whole hard drive in the event of having to re-install the os. Reformatting the c: drive would not affect any files on the other partitions (if reformatting is required or neccessary for re-installing the os).

Now all I have to do is fix the adapter port so the power can be plugged in and charge the battery.

10. No More Need To Overwrite

I bought two upgrades from 1.1 to 1.2. I also received the installation key. I no longer need to overwrite the key on the T22m. I think the T22m is malfunctioining (might be the hard drive or just the whole thing gave out).

Just for the sake of making sure the correct information is here. There is no "license file" on eCS on a running system. This is a license key that is entered at installation time. If the system were still running I would recommend a clean install just so that it was clean for your use but as long as you owned a license then there is no reason I know of legally for you to have to. The only reason it was an issue at all is that the license belonged to the donor of the machine and the eCS license was not part of the donation, therefore, for the license to be legal on the machine a new one would need to be purchased. I would guess there was nothing on the machine that the donor was concerned about your having (i.e. personal or business information) or the disk would have been wiped prior to it being donated. As such if you were happy with the load there would be no compelling reason to reload it other than to load it "your way" (I know I like to load them "my way"). The license issue is one of legality and not of a technical nature.

Thank you for the information.

I now have an upgrade for 1.2 from 1.1. I will use it to 'over write' the eCS 1.2 key. I will have to work on the A22m (it is malfunctioning; it might need a hard drive or it could be just not working).

I'm guessing you haven't run eCS. You must supply a valid key to run the installer. That is pretty much the extent of the enforcement.

As for the license, that is a legal agreement between you and SSI.

So BigWarpGuy's eCS will run, and I expect that he wants to buy a license in order to be legal, not because he can't run eCS without a key or something.
