Sun announced it will open source java on this infoworld article. (Oct 25).

It says "The core platform encompasses the Standard Edition of Java, and it will be offered via an open source format under an OSI (Open Source Initiative)-approved license, likely the same one used for Sun's open source Solaris OS. Sun officials, including Rich Green, Sun executive vice president for software, have talked about Java being offered via open source in stages later this year and into 2007. Parts of it, such as the Java Enterprise Edition, already are available via open source, with the GlassFish application server constituting the open source enterprise variant."

This is great news assuming the license doesn't require any royalties paid.

http://www.kaffe.org/ This uses classvm which currently implements 1.4.2 but has a 1.5 branch that could be used.

Here it is also a link to the GNU Classpath project.

"GNU Classpath, Essential Libraries for Java, is a GNU project to create free core class libraries for use with virtual machines and compilers for the java programming language."

Also kissme.sourceforge.net has an open-source JVM that works with GNU classpath. It looks like the two of them together add up to a free version of Java 1.4

I am not aware of anyone having started the port. At this stage I am not sure it is even a plan per se. I started looking porting http://www.kaffe.org/ as it seemed the easiest starting point. It uses the gnu classpath and there is a 1.5 branch for classpath but I haven't enough skill to port it and lack the time to become so skilled.

Is kaffe.org compatible enough with Sun Java?
What about java 6 version?
Are there anyone, who began to port Sun Java 6?

Looking at this site: https://jdk6.dev.java.net/. I thought that maybe the sources can be compile in the same manner as other UNIX ports.

Is this possible?, are there too many OS dependecies?

Without having looked at the code, I would suggest that a port for command line style applications might be relatively straightforward - things like Swing - ie gui apps would need to be ported to OS/2. Unless someone ports Java to Qt or SDL or something....

Well, that site and these two:

https://openjdk.dev.java.net/hotspot/
https://openjdk.dev.java.net/compiler/

have the sources of the JVM v. 6. That's the whole virtual machine, not an application. They have a Win32, a linux and a Sun version.

What Smedles means when he mentions command-line-style applications is that in general when working with portable code, things which deal with the command-line interface have the least potential for incompatibility issues, as they are generally handled by standard functions.

This, in contrast with parts that work with the GUI. You mention Linux and Solaris versions, which share the X GUI. Windows is different from X, and is therefore implemented differently. OS/2's GUI API is nothing like X and only very distantly related to Windows - so there is nothing in the OpenJDK code which knows at all how to present things on the OS/2 GUI.

So what Smedles means is that it might theoretically be straightforward to port that portion of the JDK which would support command-line Java applications, but to support GUI Java applications, the JDK would have to have code for talking to a toolkit that has been ported to OS/2 - such as Qt or SDL.

Otherwise, the entire SWING engine would have to be written for the OS/2 PM API, which is far too huge.

Someone more knowledgeable might be able to comment on the feasibility of utilizing the older OS/2 Java JDK's somehow for GUI support, but even if that is possible it is a matter of work.

Consider, too, that Java contains a lot of code, and the more code there is, the more work it is to handle all of the cross-platform snags and glitches.

Definitely too many OS dependencies. Think SWT, OpenOffice, or SQLite. At least the OS layer is abstracted out where once coded there wouldn't be too much to update for future versions like SWT, OpenOffice, or SQLite.

The build system would either have to be hacked like it was for Win32 or re-written for OS/2. It is extremely Unix-oriented and Unix-bound.

Other than that, it would take time to port like we are doing for SWT.

SWING does not have to be re-written for OS/2, because it is pure Java byte code. Only the Java virtual machine must be compiled for OS/2!

Exactly. Let me explain something. In order to use Java you need the Java Virtual Machine. This "machine" is a program that takes the byte codes produced by a compiler and "it interprets" that into native OS/2 code.

So you need the compiler "javac" and the interpreter "JVM" and both are open source now.

My idea was to take the sources of a Unix distribution and applying the techniques used on the other ports, generate a jvm.dll and a javac.exe for OS/2.

The problem I thought "we" could have is that for instance to translate code from NIO package into OS/2 code the port is going to use the libc calls not the native socket calls, generating some impact on the performance. The threading is also an issue, I have no idea if there is a good threading library available... etc

Saying SWT is Java byte code does not explain away the absence of code in OpenJDK for drawing on OS/2 PM. Whether it's required in the SWT toolkit or the virtual machine or both or something else doesn't change the amount of work required to implement all the GUI functions on the PM API, and is a moot distinction. No-one has yet explained how that can be overcome.

Threading, socket calls and performance of libc are insignificant by comparison.

Ok, let's go back to basics. SWING is written in Java (that means if you port the JVM you get SWING), that means, it doesn't need to talk directly to PM, it does it through the JVM. That's why is slower than PM in OS2 or Win32 on Windows. To solve that problem IBM came up with SWT. This is a layer that talks directly to the windows subsystem of the operating system through JNI.

SWT has nothing to do with the JVM or SWING or byte codes (I guess I didn't express myself well enough). It is a separate development aiming at replacing SWING as a GUI for Java applications.

Porting the JVM has value on its own (even if you don't get SWING). There is so much you can do with it that doesn't require a GUI.

PS. Daniel Kruse and I are still working on the SWT port to OS/2

Sorry I was momentarily confused and said SWT when I meant SWING. Responding to Tapio's remark that SWING does not need to be ported. Of course that may be true, strictly speaking.

And for all I know OpenJDK can use IBM's native Java 1.1 for drawing to the GUI. I just don't know that, so I'm assuming there is much work to be done to get the GUI.

If the JVM is useful without the GUI then Smedles' general recommendation stands that text-based stuff should be relatively straightforward, so it's worth a try, for one so inclined.
