Ref. to older thread regarding OpenOffice and that during Warpstock Europe it was mentioned that one hoped to see some sort of release of OO during December (now). As well there was an news where NorthLAN Solutions, Serenity Systems, and InnoTek have announced that they plan to make OpenOffice available for OS/2.

Any update regarding this topic?

Kim,

What I've heard that the public beta will be out in about a month or so. That the new preview of Fontlib v2.10 by Innotek need some testing for OO/2.
I've seen alpha 15 of OO/2 running and is rockstable for a lot of people...

The future is looking very nice regarding this subject...

With kind regards,

Henk/2

That is awesome to hear. Have you heard anything about how well it prints? I know that was the problem with simply using the Windoze version under Odin for many people.

I can hardly wait for this to become available as I will be able to remove Windoze totally from my desktop computer once OO.o works under OS/2 and eCS.

Can only agree; I'm as well looking forward for the Os2 version since I already now uses it under linux. Ok, it misses some features that I would like to have from Smartsuite; but having an Office tool cross-os; can it get better?

I current use Star Office for OS/2 (bought it back when Sun had bought it and brought down the price - IIRC). I look forward to a newer ST/OO. I have Open Office for Win but could not get it to load onto my Warp computer (I won't have to try it once the OS/2-eCS version of OO comes out ).

The cdrom that has the SO for OS/2 also has the other versions.

I'm only curious what had happened to all OS/2-related code from StarOffice 5.1x versions. Was it so old and unusable for OO that Innotek had to use Odin? Or some (possibly Sun, when opensourcing) buried it down and did not wanted to open now...?
regards

A lot have changed since the StarDIvision days, with both the framework and the application itself. It is much more cost effective to create an Odin wrapper than trying to make an old fashion port, using antiquated code.

No, it was just a decision by Sun to stop supporting OS/2, the original OO lib by Stardivision has simply not been updated much lately, but it was rock solid if a tad slow. Innotek specialises in doing Odin based ports, why shuld they start from the ground up with something that they are not familiar with

Rock Solid? Star Office 5.1? I wouldn't go that far, that application crashed more then the early releases of Mozilla But the OO is not releated to SO in any way other then having the ability to open SO files, they didn't reuse code... OO is more like the mozilla of office programs.. though that would be cool.. an office program completely written in XUL and run in mozilla.. hmm.. maybe oo should be dropped... god knows that we need something to use up all this cheap ram!!

Hiho/2 all

First best wishes for 2004 and a splended eCS/\OS/2 year...

I'm running now Beta 1 of OO/2 and it's very nice to play with.
All the stuff from friends that I get, from very nice Powerpoint presentations , Excel files and Word files, OO/2 is reading this without a glitch.
OO/2 seems to me heavily depending on the new Innotek FrontLib v2.1x
and is running fine here...

I do not know why Innotek made this build not yet public, but it could be relayed to Frontlib probs on certain computers

With kind regards,

Henk/2

What kind of hardware requirements are minimum for oo.org?

Would I be able to get much use of it on my daughter's old Toshiba laptop with an AMD K6-2 333 and 128Meg of RAM?

Mark,

I have not found any references to the OS/2 requirements about system requirements...

- unzip the archive to a drive supporting long file names. Make sure
you have at least 300MB of free space on this drive.

After the install it's about 140 Mb.

I do think that the system of your daughter is more than enough. If OS/2 or eCS is running "good" on it, I for see no problems...

I'm a very happy camper with OO/2

With kind regards,

Henk/2

I downloaded and installed the Beta on my IBM Aptiva 450 MHz machine with 300 MB of RAM and it ran so wonderfully SLOW that I could make toast while waiting for the program to open... then I finally managed to type a short hello world type of sentence on the blank page... one slow character at a time.... finally when I tried to print (which worked by the way) it took almost fifteen minutes to print the one single sentence. Therefore, I would recommend a computer with MUCH more power than my 450 MHz machine... looks like I will be upgrading soon.

Just wonder, I haven't downloaded it yet, but is there any kind of debugger code included that might cause it to run slow (or might be so that it's not yet optimized)?

My machine is a PII-300MHz laptop with 256MB RAM. Stuff is slow to open and slow to load, but once loaded, it runs okay.
So it's no speed demon, what with beta code and all, but it is useable speed (except certain operations, such as copying of charts).

For a beta, not bad. It's certainly A LOT better than running anything under VirtualPC on the same machine.

Hmm.. after running it once it claims that oowin.dll is missing. Guess that I need to check the support forum for this one

I have no idea if there is debugger code in the Beta or not. I do know that I am replacing my computer before the end of the year and I look forward to being able to use OpenOffice.org under eCS very soon.
