Anyone aware of if there exist any kind of application to monitor IP traffic, ie what I want is to at least see if there are any traffic on odd ports that I would not like to see on my system. Compare with the easy interface such BlackIce offers.

I don't know about the standard TCP/IP stack, but, the InJoy Firewall does do this.

Personally, I don't worry about this much. I have InJoy on my gateway at home, but, on my laptop, I just make sure nothing is running that I don't want running. If I was always behind my gateway, this wouldn't be a concern. But, I plug this machine into the network at work, and, they are a lot less careful there (all our servers have been up and down with the current set of viruses). By simply not running anything that's not needed, it appears as "stealthed" on the various port testing sites.

Agree that there might not be that much worry when running behind any kind of router or using OS2 since nothing much can really do anything. But, it would be nice to see when someone doing a portscan or trying to connect to a port the isn't enabled. When I had ADSL there was users that always keept on scanning for open ports etc. And stupid enought they sitting on the same net segment as I did so it was nice to send in an abuse report when the same users have been trying for week or two using the same IP....
