| Hi I'm trying to format a 256 MB CF card to HPFS (via USB). The format is no problem, but when it is done, it asks for a label, and then tells me : SYS0527: HPFS (High Performance File System) data cannot be copied to the specified disk. I have no problem formatting as fat ! Is 256 MB too small a disk for HPFS ? Or do you have any other ideas ? Thanks Kim |

| Hi, there might be lots of reasons why it doesn't work: USB removable media support, USB kernel, OS kernel levels are just a few. Greetings |

| HI >What os are you using. OS/2 or eCS - and what version? I'm using Warp 4.0 Fixpack 17 >In general, there's no "lower" limit known to me when formatting drives with I expected as much, but you neer know ;o) >is it a "removable device" like floppy or is it a "USB mass storage device" Removable MSD : BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD /FLOPPIES:0 /REMOVABLES:1 Does that help ? |

Hi kif, yes it helps. At least in matters of reducing the places to search for information Greetings |

| Just to try it from another point of view; but have you tried to format the CF card using a PC-Card based adapter. At least the USB isn't involved? |

| Kif, I agree with Kim in matter that the problem might be rather related to the fact of using USB... okay, just to give it a try: Did you try to boot up the system with the CF card already attached? Does it make any difference? BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD /FLOPPIES:0 /REMOVABLES:1 /REMOVABLE_AS_FLOPPY or BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD /FLOPPIES:0 /REMOVABLES:1 /REMOVABLE_AS_FLOPPY /FORCE_TO_REMOVABLE ...and check again, eventually with the preceeding steps (boot with media inserted and/or re-plugging with refreshing media)... Sorry I can't give a precise solution - I'm somehow limited in matters of testing environments here at work. HTH, Greetings |

| Hi >have you tried to format the CF card using a PC-Card based adapter. At Good idea, that was my first thought, but unfortunatly I have mislaid my PCMCIA CF card reader, so for now I'm stuck with USB :o(. >Did you try to boot up the system with the CF card already attached? Not shure, will try. >If this doesn't show any significant improvement try to add the following Thanks for your help, I'll try your suggestions, and come back with the result. Kif |

| Hi Over the weekend I have tried booting with different parameters for the USBMSD, with the following results. BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD /FLOPPIES:0 /REMOVABLES:1 /REMOVABLE_AS_FLOPPY BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD /FLOPPIES:0 /REMOVABLES:1 /REMOVABLE_AS_FLOPPY /FORCE_TO_REMOVABLE and BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD /FLOPPIES:0 /REMOVABLES:1 /FORCE_TO_REMOVABLE All gave a floppy icon (last one gave a harddisk) in the drives folder, could not format as HPFS, not supported for this drive. BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD /FLOPPIES:0 /REMOVABLES:1 With card in reader at boot, worked ! Thanks for your help. Kif |

| Please pardon me jumping in, I have a similar issue. I have a 1GB OCZ USB pen drive. It works fine formatted as FAT16 but I want to use it to xfer files between WIN/LINUX/OS2 and would like to preserve long file names via FAT32. I have formatted it to FAT32 on WIN. OS/2 will recognize the drive letter when I insert the device but it does not like to read any files. I have installed the FAT32 IFS from NetLabs (V.99b). I have all of the most recent USB drivers. (actually I think I have most recent of all drivers). OS2 is ECS v1.2. I have tried booting with the drive installed and the FAT32 partition is recognized by the FAT32IFS utilities. I haven't fully tried everything yet, but am looking for some feedback. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

...so everything works fine when the drive was installed prior to booting the machine...?
I'm sorry I can't help you with that. I have noticed that when I try to format my SD cards with anything else than FAT16, my digital camera refuses to use them, so does my MP3 player. Therefore, I didn't try to get other than FAT16 on them. I might however give a try to my USB memory stick... but this will mean that I can't plug the USB stick to other peoples machines without caring about "is the FAT32.IFS installed!?". My current workaround is to store files with long names in short-named ZIP folders on the storage device. That works like a charm thanks to InfoZip (available for almost every platform). On eCS|OS/2 I use FC/2's built-in zip functions, and that's very, very comfortable. Sorry for not having "the ultimate" solution. Greetings |

Well everything worked fine with FAT16. With FAT32 either booted or hotplugged the partition can be seen but the data not accessed.
Thanks, |
