2. Re:Win32PRN Project? |
|
|
" Note about Win32PrnAt the moment, the project is in public beta stage and is freeware. Project files are time limited (30 days after build) and must be updated after this term. Requirements To set up printer under WIN32PRN one must first set it up under native OS. That's why to use the project one need OS Microsoft Windows 2000 set up and running. Also to load PE executables and provide required envirinment in OS IBM OS/2 project ODIN is used. It is recommended to use last ODIN version. In case you've faced problems to make a bug report you will need a debug version of the ODIN (to create necessary log files). Features and limitations At ideal state this project must run any Windows 2000 printer driver (and Windows XP too, but this possibility is not tested yet). At current moment this is limited by nonideal emulation of the printing subsystem of the WIN32PRN project (this is what author is working at) and nonideal emulation of the OS Windows by the ODIN project (and this is harder to fix). Not only black and white printing is supported (but on the color printers too). " Could one install the Win driver on a WinPC and copy that directory to a eCS computer? Would it work? What other things would one do to get it to work?

I also had a reply from Vit but he does not seem to be involved with it any more and referred me to Roderick. They said that Mensys had taken over it. They did not mention where one can download the files.

Yes I do recall the Voice message. Mensys has now received the source code. It will take some amount of time for them to do some work on it. It will not be a free download as I recall. Andy |

| If it means getting a win driver only printer working in eCS or OS/2, I would not mind paying for it; assuming the price is reasonable. I really want to get my HP CLJ 1600 working with my eCS computer.

"At the moment there is no new version yet. The old version is not functional anymore, since there are timers in it that limit its use in time. Currently, I'm looking with Mensys at the possibility to develop win32prn further myself, but this is still in the very early stages. If there's news to report, it shall be done via os2warp.be's news page (the home page). > I am hoping to use the win32prn files to see if I can get a HP color > laserjet 1600 printer working with my eCS pc. HP does not support OS/2 > with this printer. One of the coming weeks I am going to write a completely new export utility for win32prn drivers, and I'm going to recompile the old shit. You can then betatest for me Later, JB. Tom Lee Mullins wrote: > I tried to download the win32prn project files but received a 'page not > found' error. Are there any others who would be willing to beta test it? I look forward to using win-only-driver printers with my eCS pc.

| I looked at Win32Prn, too, and I wonder if it could be worth the effort? It looks really nasty, needing Win32 and OS/2 driver level and OS level code, and very soon Win32 is to be superceded by Win64. There isn't any ODIN64, as far as I know. An alternative is CUPS, which we also can't have, but needs only a few improvements to GCC 3.3.5 in order to build. Then I guess building some kind of OS/2 support would still be needed, but only once, and then that would support all the printers available on Linux. |

I don't see how CUPS will help us. CUPS says: CUPS requires a PPD file to define how it will use the printer and driver (if any). PPD files come from several sources, be sure you get yours from the right place:If we have a PPD file then we can use them with pin. |

| I'm no expert on CUPS, but PPD files are not just for PostScript printers. Now Linux can print on a large number of printers, check out the list at http://www.linuxprinting.org/printer_list.cgi I think more than just CUPS is involved, though. There is also quite a list of drivers. I don't know if this is a problem, though. |

I was told that the next version will cost $20. I think this is a very reasonable price especially if one can use it to be able to print to any Win only printer with eCS.

I actually got past one of the problems (with select() ) in getting CUPS working, and am working on resolving some other issues. I can at least start cupsd and get a response from http://localhost:631 which is a good start! As I understand it, to utilise CUPS on OS/2, it should be possible to setup a generic postscript driver - using the PPD file from the cups site, and then the cups daemon translates the postscript into the printer specific code. Cheers, Paul. |

17. Win32PRN Project Dead? |

Perhaps someone else could work on it? (I am hoping on it since I would really like to use my HP CLJ 1600 with my eCS PC).

Win32prn would have been dropped due it being less likely to produce useful results with more work than eCUPS is likely to get with less work. Your HP CLJ 1600 probably has greater chance of success with eCUPS in a shorter period of time than if someone were to pick up win32prn. |

I will have to check out eCUPS and see if it works with my HP CLJ 1600.
