Hi, Regarding a recent post by Mark Hessling... (Mark Hessling posts that he will stop supporting any of his REXX software on OS/2-eCS), I'd be willing to chip in for a copy of eCS for him, if Mensys or Serenity isn't willing to do so themselves... perhaps we should forward Mark's post to them and see how they respond? Anyone have any ideas as to who is the best person there to contact? Thanks,

Sounds like a good idea. Also - are our interpreters (Classic and Object) and Regina really that different ? If they are, wouldn't it be wise to narrow that gap ?

It would be nice to elaborate WHY half the time is spent debugging OS/2 issues and none of the other platforms. That seems to be more the issue than any lack of an OS/2 or eCS machine. At any rate, I believe all those packages are GPL, no? Anyone else could pick it up if they have time. Funny though, if he's debugging it, it means somebody is actually _using_ it and reporting the bugs. I get blank faces every time I mention Rexx to Linux or Windows users. Maybe that's why the "lack" of bugs?

One way to look at it is that Regina is currently available on OS/2. If Classic REXX / Object REXX is that much different from Regina, it should still be possible to run these various REXX utilities under Regina for OS/2.

Or add IBM Classic/Object REXX calls to Regina, to enhance compatability - that would make it easier to replace the IBM REXX interpreters with Regina, later on (A replacement will be necessary at some point).

Hi all, there is no doubt: the person to talk to - regarding the donation of a copy of eCS - is Bob St.John. To ISAAC: I think the main problem here is the develompment environment on OS/2. I find it frustrating too.

Folks, I also contacted Mark to tell him that I'm willing to sponsor a copy of eCS and even fund (to some extend) parts of hardware if he rquires it to continue supporting OS/2. Anyway. Let's see what he responds. If I get an answer back from him, I'll post it here. Greetings

I have been interested in trying Regina but have never had enough motivation to actually do it. I agree though that REXX/SQL is important... I would like to see it added to in fact (sqlite, and postgre for OS/2). Andy |

As far as having an installed copy of OS/2 without having to dual-boot lots (or worry too much about hardware), if he's running windows on one of his computers, he might be able to make use of Virtual PC which Microsoft just recently announced it was giving away. As I recall, VPC is one of the few virtual environments that will run OS/2. Of course, there's still the development environment issues that have been commented about.

FWIW - I've been able to help Mark get the latest Regina built with Innotek libc and have offered to help him debug any problems he has building his various ports under OS/2. Cheers, Paul. |
