The OpenOffice.org 2.0 beta 1 (2.0.4 sourcecode) has been announced as of February 2, 2007...

http://www.ecomstation.com/news.phtml?action=fullnews&id=2032

The news release specifically states "no planned support" for Java and Mozilla. This of course also means no support for an OpenOffice-specific internal database that would require Java database connectivity.

However, it "has just been discovered" that OpenOffice for Linux can have external database connectivity: "Connector/J" and "Connector/ODBC"...

http://www.linux.com/article.pl?sid=07/02/12/1736203

QUESTION #1: Would this external database connectivity also apply to the coming OpenOffice for eCS/OS-2?

If so, you still end up with a superior database experience such as MySQL or DB2 while there are quite a few up-to-date features of the coming OpenOffice that look good under eCS/OS-2.

QUESTION #2: How OS/2-native does this OpenOffice offering look to have bonafide Workplace Shell object-oriented aspects?

I still not get why Java can't be supported. Last time I checked the OpenOffice website it said Java 1.3.1 would be enough as requirement and there's also Java 1.4.x available on eCS and OS/2.

OpenOffice requirements (including Java versions)

You speak of Connector/J the MySQL database driver. This one needs Java and that's the Java used form inside OpenOffice. That's what this port lacks.

I don't know Connector/ODBC, but it seems that it has to be ported to eCS and OS/2.

OpenOffice.org has native PostgreSQL support. I don't think it needs Java.

OS/2 has native PostgreSQL support
