March 31 marked the tenth anniversary of the Release of IBM's OS/2 2.0, which was many people's first exposure to a real operating system for Intel-based computers and which for many more was the first illustration of how a superior product does not necessarily succeed. As a memorial to that once-promising product, Linux & Main publish the following article, written as a magazine piece nearly five years ago, which analyzes the factors that contributed to OS/2's failure as a desktop operating system.

Well, what can I say! There are a lot of histories going around wthin and outside IBM regarding how bad the marketing was. Even the sale force didn't have any thing over for OS/2. I know about an example where a sale rep had a quota of selling 20.000 licenses. When he figured out that he wouldn't make the goal he asked the the quota was based on the number of licenses sold and nothing else. The answer was that he should sell licences; price was no issue. So what he did was to call one of Sweden biggest computer magazines and offered them to buy 20.000 OS/2 Warp 3 licences for $2000 ! Well, there is always a solution to everything. Okey, he got out a high number of licenses, but the magazine was a Windows magazine so talk about waste....
