1. FAT32 FS & USB Memory |
|
|
last updated at 05 Apr, 2004 14:13 (1 times) Question regarding the FAT32 driver available, when booting the system without any kind of FAT32 partition the drivers seems to disable itself since there would then not be an use, or?Reason for asking is that I'm using a SanDisk cruzer mini 256MB USB memory together with OS2. And currently plain FAT is the FS to be used for proper r/w access. So installing the FAT32 driver ( version 0.98 ) for OS2 was in the hope of being able to use FAT32 within this USB media instead of plain FAT. But, due to the fact that FAT32 driver seems to disable itself sort of gives me some headache. Can the FAT32 be forced to install so the USB memory can be used using FAT32 FS? |

That's only the cache32.exe terminating. You shouldn't use any write cache anyway when using FAT32 on removables. Have a look here for information how to use FAT32 on removables: http://www.os2world.com/cdwriting/cwusbmsd/archos.htm Be prepared for some rough edges but in general it works. BTW the WPS will not write long filenames on the device when it's not connected during boot. Using the command line everything is fine, though. Regards Chris |

last updated at 05 Apr, 2004 16:29 (1 times) You mention that you use DaniDASD to get the proper fat32 support. Question then about DaniDASD v1.4.4 found at Hobbes, this only supports non-lvm systems. Are there any newer version available or should I go ahead using the 1.4.4 version on my LVM-based system? |

I think it all depends on what kind/brand of flash you use.. With my card reader and a smartmedia card the fat32 did work with the IBM mass-storage driver, later I bought a sweex flash stick and then I did need the CWmass storage driver and on the sweex fat32 wont work, not even with netdrive.. Maybe my sweex is USB 1.0?.. I'm not sure about it. But I when I (re)format the smartmedia to fat32 then half? of the time I need dfsee to set the proper byte to fat32 code (0B)Chris. |

| No, its not (needed) for a LVM system, see the readme from the fat32 IFS driver, that explains it.. |

| Hmm.. okey, I'm trying to avoid this kind of extra steps since I don't want spend time on this kind of activities. I mean I can live with that I'm only able to work with FAT based FS within the USB memory. But if I can get away with just a simple upgrade to DaniDASD and it will work with a LVM based system without me having to risc to crash the system, well I would be happy then. Also when comparing IBM and Chris W. mass storage drivers are the any huge difference? I mean, there is a new usb mass storage driver available from Software Choice. But, what has been updated within the IBM driver? |

I don't expect there will be an upgrade to DaniDASD because LVM is doing this job today.. you could say LVM is the update.. but there are differences.. Its all about being able to give drive letters to alien partitions.. the CW-mass driver seems to work with more devices.. and I do agree with it from my own experiances.. The IBM has a better detection when you insert media.. but when you use USBmountd (hobbes) you get very close.. another difference is that the CW beeps when it recognise a device.. although in praktize in beeps with every device you insert but without a proper driver there still is nothing. so don't trust the beeps.. This new USB and Massdriver are not yet at ecomstation.com.. so I know nothing about it.. we have to wait .. Chris |

Right then, I uninstalled the FAT32 then there was no use for. I'm then back on square one then regarding mounting FAT32 USB memory devices, well mounting works but I'm not able to work with the device either from WPS or command line. Guess that i just have to live with plain FAT 16 if nothing else is suggested. |

I have asked the primary developer if it is possible to force the FAT32 driver to load if no fat32 media are found on bootup. He says it is and hopefully a furture version will have a switch one can set to force the driver to load. If I understood his reply, the present driver does not load if no FAT32 driver is found. Well, the latest IBM USB mass driver (and USB basics) did solve all my problems.. It does find both my sweex and the card reader. And now I can insert a card in the reader after boot and when its connected at boot (cq turned on).Not bad at all.. Maybe it even works with fat32 now.. .. I'll try it when I get a change.. PS its at ecomstation.com but use ftp to get it.. Chris |
