There is an increasing number of USB devices (I have seen a HP USB scanner for under $50). Are there any USB drivers for OS/2 (specifically for a scanner)? Can the base USB driver for OS/2 work or does it need more than that?

Meanwhile there is support for a lot of USB devices. Unfortunately, scanners are not on the list. The main reason for this is that there is no real standard for them and every scanner needs its very own, special driver. Drivers from IBM are going to be written for device classes where it is possible to support many devices with a single driver. As far as scanners are concerned we may be lucky in the future as STi has announced to re-vamp their drivers and look into USB. The base USB device driver only implements a common USB stack. Other device-specific drivers use it communicate with the devices.

I am glad that I did not buy the USB scanner. It would have been money spent on something that I could not use. The 'base usb' driver seems to support only UHCI chipset while the OHCI chipset is not supported. I did find USB drivers and a couple of 'fixes' at http://hobbes.nmsu.edu web site (I do not know if the 'fixes' were adding support for the OHCI chipset). I will give them a try.

The 'fixes' at hobbes.nmsu.edu seem to 'fix' only the UHCI USB drivers. There is nothing there about OHCI. I have heard rumours about IBM adding OHCI support to the UHCI support they already have (I am hopful that this is true).
