Just with two things to say, the first one is that I respect your position, because here where I live I believe OS/2 users represents 0.001% of the whole user base (of the country, Colombia; at this moment I'm using a Windoze machine in an Internet Room) and I find this kind of problems very often.

The second is form my personal experience; in my line of work I have to travel daily to places without Internet access (for example this year I was trying to help translating VOICE to Spanish but I'm still looking for some spare time ) , but despite the facts some years ago (1994) I'd decided to switch to OS/2 in my own PC's at home, to sell the incompatible hardware and buy only compatible hardware (I own two machines, the older one with Warp3 Blue Spine, a Creative AWE64 sound card and a Diamond Stealth3400 VRAM with 4 MB, the newer with Warp 4, nVidia Geforce4 MX 440 AGP with 64 MB , Phillips PSC602 Sound Card and a Hauppauge WinTV-D).

Sometimes I used to feel discouraged by the so-called reality; it's difficult to find compatible hardware; but everyday the things are going better. Why not sell the scanner and buy something from HP, Epson or Genius and use SANE? It will definitely worth the effort. (The satisfaction I got when my Hauppauge card arrived was unique!)

That was what I want to say. Thanks for your time and good luck, no matter what you have decided. BTW I'm not a native English-spoken; excuse my mistakes.

Actually I might consider that. I'll give it some thought.

I think you miss a point here Adam..
Its not a specific eCS/OS2 problem..
For instance.. those old DOSgames are still and are becoming popular.
Sierra and Lucas arts and more are putting their 'old' games together on one or more CD's and still selling them.. the abandon sites have to remove them..
Still they won't work in plain XP.. so whole groups of XP users are spending a lot of time in it VDM and DOSBOX.. and whatever.. and M$ is boycotting them or against them... because they don't get money for it.. there is still a lot of DOS and even OS2 in XP.. and its only blocked.. the new CMD.EXE is just a windoze program what simulates a command line... those programs already existed in WIN31..
Right at this moment people at M$ are thinking how they can force you buying a new scanner. so they get money out of your wallet..
You have a scanner and it comes with win98.. drivers OK.. its great and it works.. and you use your PC only/mostly for scanning.. well yeah.. OK then use your scanner till it breaks in win98... you can do it..
But tomorrow M$ comes with a new graphic file codec/protocol/program.. whatever and it becomes a standard.. M$ can do it.. and they did it often.. (WMF)..
Its not just the eCS/OS2 world they make a lot of problems.. in fact.. the chances are big this new file type will be supported sooner in linux/eCS as in win98...
Hardware/software is a problem as long as there are computers.. when you have drivers for a certain OS they make you force to use this OS or buy new hardware..
Creative for instance.. have DOS drivers for the SBlive.. but removed it from their site..
Although the internet is still full of them. they didn't tell me about it:-)
They keep me just on a string and trying to let me go to XP..
But why??.. why are we no longer allowed to play our good old DOS adventures..
Why are there no longer ISA busses.. why suddenly a very old apple invention.. USB.. and even firewire is now a must and is there still hardware what supports LPT.. serial ports??
What ever was wrong with a serial mouse and serial modem??.. is USB faster?? I don't think so.. its only a lot more problematic... when your USB port fails. nothing works anymore..
And what's wrong with a parallel port?? how fast are printers actually.. what is waiting for the printer?.. the PC or the LPT port?? (and I'm not even talking about USB keyboards.. how often I did need to bring my own keyboard to install or configure a PC:-) how to boot windoze from dos with a USB keyboard.. or even configure the BIOS often.. so be spare with your non USB keyboards.)
Hey.. you are using a USB scanner... why not a LPT one or a serial one..
Your problem is just a fact every PC user.. if its linux,eCS,XP.. they all have these problems sooner or later and the vendors and M$ is laughing in their face..
Combine hardware and software is the trick.. and then combine software with a certain OS.. we are all losing this battle.. no matter what OS we use.. and so you bought a win98 scanner and are forced to use win98 and are happy with it.. you made a choice.. so actually what do you want??

Zawiah (02 May, 2004 23:23):
The only frustration I've had recently has been with IBM who are very discouraging - after several emails and a telephone conversation I still haven't found out how to sign up for Software Choice! The IBM site is a mess... Anyone with OS/2 has to have a considerable investment to want to carry on. I think that eCS is the way to go! Seems a waste though!!

Well,
I have SC and here how it works:

You call an IBM Partner and ask for Passport Advantage / Software Choice subscription, they will handle also a single license.

You'll get your ID's and you are off for 1 year of connectivity to SC site.

It's not as easy as to walk into RadioShack but you'll get there.

Well and good. But I shall probably go over to eCS. It's obvious that IBM aren't bothered enough to make it clear what the procedure is and after two telephone calls and two emails to the Passport Advantage team I have to find out what to do from an independant forum. I've had this before when they never answered my queries. I used to get my support from a third party company by subscription because after the first year of registration IBM didn't care. That was the impression I formed and I've told them that and I've done the Customer Care Questionnaire on their site and told them and nary a whisper. You get support from Microsoft whether you want it or not and if you don't register with them the Men In Black come round and wipe your PCs memory... Nope - unless IBM do a special it's eCS for me!
