Well, I got following comment from one of our users. Well, I can't really give an answer or even have my opinion yet. Since I haven't downloaded the preview.

But here is the comment:

I don't know if you have checked the osfree your self... But I wonder if
news updates should be spreaded yes or no... The product is illegal... I
have spoken with some other OS/2 experts and they don't know how they
did it... They either used the Warp 4 GA binaries or recompiled the
sources of IBM that leaked out in 1996...

Let's hope that either parties has something more to say.

well, I checked the disccussion forum about this project and seems to be a further discussion on this topic.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/osFree/

Its bad, because the idea of the project is good, but possible they will get legal issues if they are using IBM files or code.
I personally haven't test to to say if its illegal or not. I check it and seems to have boot disks that put you in the OS/2 command line.

I just can say that the idea is good, possible sould start as a replacement for the Warp 4. Making a pack of OpenSource replacements for Warp 4 (and releasing it like a add-on for Warp4 ) , and not releasing a full set of boot disks.

Well, I guess that most of You have read the feedback that got posted earlier, if not read it at following url:

http://www.os2world.com/cgi-bin/news/viewnews.cgi?category=2&id=1014177230

Well, there has been a big fuzz about this code to be or not to be. Well, my opinion is that support it so far until someone can really say that this code is a ripp off from IBM. If so, well then there are some legal matters to think about. Until then I do not mind to host the code at OS2 World.

So I can currently now only say Go Go Go! And what would the *nix community say?! Well, there as well has been code ripp offs....

There is comments/discussion of this both at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/freeos and at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/osfree . There was mention of a file - osf_en - at Hobbes but it seems to have been removed/no longer available. Both groups seem to have similar goals.

Since there were claims that it was illegal, it was removed. Perhaps one could go to other source codes that can be copied and use them to create a free/clone of OS/2(?)

Well, I've been following the dialog at yahoo groups and started to get rather bored to be honest. Okey there are some issues to be cleared, but then again it is not easy when there are too many people involved with opinions that sometimes should even be said out loud....

Did You have the chance to take a look at osFree?

I left both groups at Yahoo (the OSFree and FreeOS) since the posts are quite long and tiresome to read (not being a programmer [other than being a 'newbie' at it], I also found it 'over my head'). The idea is good but they seem to do more 'discussing' than anything else.

PS I think it is still available at http://www.os2.cz in their download section (IIRC).

It is in the download section of www.os2.cz (IIRC). It is in a zip file which has .dsk files. There is a program at hobbes.nmsu.edu which extracts files from a .dsk file (I have not tried it yet). I am not a programmer but I think it is cool to look at source code even though I might not understand what I am looking at.

oh, yes and there are actually work going on developing this code. But the dialog within the Yahoo groups sort of was a bit tired to read. Same questions was poste over and over again. Nothing constructive came out of it. But, the code is still alive.
