Not that I play games that much or that I like products from Microsoft. But I actually for once got a bit interested in a product from M$. The X-Box is rather cool. Not for playing games but that you get a full PC system with harddrive (ok, it's small) USB support etc etc. And the price is here in Sweden is around $260 USD. Can you really build a cheaper system than that? So far I've seen the Mods available in form av hardware upgrades that let you install and run Linux (I'm not sure if it's directly on the harddisk or via Boot CD, but I think it was on the disk). The Mods also let you upgrade the small 8gb disk to what ever you want, such as 80-120gb disk. There is a NIC in it so together with Linux it would work out as a very cheap and almost silent Apache and fileserver! When the day comes that the Mods allows one to install what ever OS needed I would go and get me one. Here's some url's URL1, URL2 and URL3.

Running Linux on X-Box is no problem and works out really well. As well, just getting an X-Box to be used as to play DVD or DivX works really great as well. To be mentioned is that every single sale of X-Box is a loss for M$, the hardly calculate with that you buy some games as well....

Yeah the Xbox would make a great apache server for you if you don't mind your apache server overheating every 8-10 hours. The system is not designed for long uptimes, there are no cooling impliments on eithert the video card or the processor, the location of the hd in the system just creates more ambient heat if the drive was to find itself under heavy use you would find it overheating even more frequently. add that to the fact that you's need special (and expensive) cables to connect it to a vga monitor and special adapters to convert the controller ports to standard USB to have a PC with severe overheating problems, and no expandability of any sort. and if you wonder where i get the info.. I work for one of the largest video game stores in the United States (and world wide) and I know how many of these things we get back in a week/month.

They seem to build game boxes like they do their operating system.

Hmm.. 8-10 hours update when speaking of heating that really low value. Ok, X-Box doesn't have any fan then. What about the PS2 and other game boxes; any fans in them? Or is just that X-Box is build on PC-combonents that this is an issue now?

There is 1 fan in both Xbox and PS2... 2 in the gamecube (1 processor heatsink on the ppc and the other in the side of the case) but the problem with the xbox is the PC architecture. A 733 mhz p3 without any heatsink or cooling fan, cramed next to a nvidea chip with no heatsink or cooling fan and next to a seagate hd and underneath a liteon dvd player is nothing more then a space heater under a different name.

In other words, they (M$) should stick with software and leave hardware alone(?)
