Hi,

Does anybody have any information on which banks in the United States still use OS/2 Warp for their basic operating system and OS/2 1.3 for their ATMs?

I would rather keep my money in a bank that
uses Warp than Windows!!

Thanks!!

Basically none of them, atleast not for so much longer, Chase no longer uses OS/2, they use these horrible XP touchscreen machines, M&T (my bank) recently upgrades, I fear they are no longer OS/2 based or someone made a major improvement in the UI and a screwed up it's processing speed, HSBC = WinXP, Bank of New York are mostly OS/2 but changing pretty quickly..

Can one really consider switching from OS/2 to Win an upgrade?

Well, one wonders, but then again, people can start to take photos of the ATM's bluescreen and post it here at OS2 World

Webster Bank, here in Connecticut, was OS/2 for their ATMs. I have asked people working there if they have changed it to Window. They do not know. I also told them I would not use their ATM if they change to Window, because I do not trust that will ever be as secure as OS/2 is... I don't think they care though.

I still rather often stumple over customers that are using OS2 Communications servers within their backend system together with 390 and OS/400 - they just don't dare to switch the system to Windows.

Actually, most banks still use OS/2. It's in their check sorters. These machines sort 40 checks/second, and do it all night, basically non-stop. Some banks have more than 200 of these machines.

"Banco do Brasil" still uses OS/2. The ATMs and internal machines run customized versions of OS/2 Warp 4. I don't know for how long they'll stay with OS/2, though.

HSBC in the UK still uses Warp 4, but they are migrating their applications to web-based, so that when IBM pulls the plug they can switch OS easily (their words) - hopefully to Linux rather than Windows...

Credit Agricole in France reputedly uses OS/2, but Credit Mutuel (my bank) uses Windows I'm thinking of swapping for that reason.

Ahem... I don't have such picture with a W2KBSOD, but I could provide you with a cute "SYS3175" on a "Caisse d'Epargne" ATM when we were in Chamonix last summer...

Bye for now.

Well, post photos of this kind within the Micro$oft Pictures board.

Err!... Don't you have an OS/2 section instead ? I think my picture would best fit in it. ("SYS3175" is not only the name of a japanese web page... ).

Anyway, I'll post it there in a few minutes.

Too late.

I was glad to see OS/2 installed somewhere in France anyway... We can't see it anymore on France Telecom stores computer screens.

Bye.

Hi,

most banks don't feel comfortable with going away from OS/2 either, but they are facing severe problems:
A guy I know from my IT-Courses at the chamber of commerce in Cologne works in the central computing center of "Volksbank/Raiffeisenbank" here in Germany. They are currently moving to a Windows/Linux solution... and none of the guys is happy with that - but: IBM made them aware that with mid 2006, they'll stop support for both OS/2 and TokenRing Networks. So either they find themselves without support (and this means real hi-professional support for ATMs, network and server farms - not "end-user" style support) OR they change to a different platform that IBM (or any other COMPANY) can provide support for.

It's just that simple. Those people are no fools, they know that OS/2 is more secure, but what the heck? If windoze and linux will crash and smash their stuff... why worry? They have support, warranties, insurance and could even sue IBM or Wincor/Nixdorf (ATM) for their losses. In the end, it's the bank customers who really actually "pay" for any kind of danger: With their account fees... so, conclusion:
They need a platform and solution with support - and they have nothing to lose.

Greetings
Thomas

It is a shame they don't sue IBM to make them not only continue support of OS/2 but also keep improving it.
