I know that this topic has been up many times before and I also know that we have been working on how to get further on and move the entire site to new system. Well, we are still working on it and the biggest effort is to move 1) all the news to new system and this has now been tested in small scale and works and finally 2) move the existing forum to a new system and here we don't have any really solution. Might be that we stick with UltraBoard and will make an integration component to the new system.

So what new system do we plan to make use of then? Currently the CMS system in favor is Joomla and I've already moved couple of other sites to this, but non of the other has the same amount of data where OS2 World holds huge amount of articles needed to be moved and re-arranged.

For thoose of you that haven't looked around that much on what Joomla looks or feels like, check out this other site that I'm working with and is currently in moving state from old to new system: www.whiskyforum.com

There are loads of features and components available for Joomla so open for suggestion here.

/Kim

Kim, currently a nice feature for users that we talked about is to have the same Joomla User ID and password for the Ultraboard Forum, and possible use the same userId and password for other services, like e-mail, etc.

Yes, if we stick with UltraBoard there I will see to that the user db will be synced betwen the forum and Joomla userdb. Also we will have the possibility of syncing users from sub-sites as well.

As mentioned is that there will also be a MailBot that automatic imports news feed from e-mails and as well I think we will add some more features on handling news imports from external systems.

Yes, I remember this topic going around before.

Updates of this size are always fun and games at best.

I'd like it if did not use a fixed width setup.

Nothing bothers me more than seeing a site crowded all into the left, or center of my screen. What a waste of desktop realestate!

I don't usually bring this up, but I always try to mention it when a site I frequent is about to update.

I've used Joomla/Mambo on about 30 websites over the years and I've found that every version, (of either), ever released always had serious problems. Some of them manifested themselves straight away, others took awhile to show up. Those sneaky ones I found, usually created the biggest problems albeit, later on.

The only sites that I saw online that didn't eventually have problems, where ones that were catered to by professionals who were trained to do just that, on a daily basis.

In the end I dropped that CMS line, (and branches), altogether, and went with something else.

But I've posted all this here before, and I assume you've read that and taken my comments into account, so I'll end it here.

I look forward to seeing your new site.

Good luck!

I've read earlier notes from you and as you mention one of the issues with for example Joomla is that every new version tends to break some component used. But, then again, I think that the we have to look at both the ups and downs here and continue the work with the site as it works now just takes to much time. This is also the reason why I've been trying out both Mambo/Joomla, Drupal on sites to see how it works out and as well have some other people involved along with the other sites that helps out testing components. So I hope that we will avoid any big problems. And as well, I always keep test sites where I either mirror live site or same component structure to test new upgrades of what ever comes along to for example Joomla.

But, it seems that it's time to do this transfer for real and as well we are doing some hardware upgrade and OS upgrade on the server, but more info will be posted about this since this will involve the people who have ftp and pop access to the OS2 World server.

I've noticed that you've decided to stick with Ultraboard.

Any particular reason?

Well, I think we'll stick with UltraBoard until we figured out a way to move all data to a new script. Also I not sure what forum to make use of; so open for suggestion about what forum to use.

I figured as much...

Getting, or making a conversion script has got to be a pain at the least and dicey at best.

As for a replacement, I've installed about 20 copies and varying versions, of SMF and I've found it to be a great forum for which development is regular and ongoing and there are plenty of good quality themes for which you can use or base your own upon.

It's up to version 1.11 at this point, and there are several third party websites that cater only to this forum.

You can find the main site for info and downlaod at; SMF's website.

There are several bridges available to work with Joomla/Mambo depending on your desired level of integration, including merged user databases.

I find it robust, highly configurable and presentable.

I find it works good with Tiny Portal which is done by some of the same people.

They integrate nicely to make a good CMS/Forum combination.

I have no idea if there are conversion scripts available for Ultraboard 2000 but I'm sure it's easy to find out. Just post a query on their support board... which is SMF of course.

Ben: Thanks for the suggestion of SMF, I did look at it way back but then it just never occur to me to take look again. And it actually looks really great now.

Martin: Thanks for the forum matrix it haven't seen that around and based on that and picking forums that I know we have talked about earler I set up and compared.

Also as been mention the SMF seems to have great bridging support to Joomla. Only thing that I can't find if there is a bot to have article comments linked directly into the forum. Currently on some other sites, such as WhiskyForum, we're testing with joomlaBoard (sucks big time) and one huge motivator to use is for the other guys involved was the comment Bot available. Is there one for SMF?
