This might interesting.
eyeOS, a web based operating system. With eyeOS you can access your data and your applications anywhere, anytime. A virtual office in your hands, no need to install anything in the computer. Everything lives in the browser, for you and your work colleagues. eyeOS is open source and free software. Try the demo and if you like it, install it in your server. Make your life easier with the virtual word processor, calendar, file manager, messenger, browser and other applications. And if you want more applications, just visit the eyeOS Application Database!

It works independently of the operating system and works on any browser? Have you tried it using OS/2 or eCS? What browser do you use with it?

" Before Installing: Requirements

The main requirement for a new eyeOS Installation is a PHP compatible web server installed locally or with a web hosting company. Our recommendation is to use a Unix/Linux server with Apache Web Server version 1.3.x or 2.0.x and PHP version 4.3.x or 5.0.x.

eyeOS is primarily file based and requires no database for its operation. You will however need the capability of uploading files and directories to the webspace and to be able to change folder permissions.

Your browser needs to be standards-compliant and support CSS. eyeOS graphics make use of alpha channel .png files so your browser will need to support those also. It is necessary to enable your browser to accept cookies from the eyeOS server. "

It is open source. I thought it was a service. It seems that one installs it and can use it on ones web server?
