We have for a long period been looking into new content management system to migrate the entire site to. But there is a big issue that we might not be able to solve in a proper way.
We have currently all the news categorized and listed its own section on the main index page. On some of the system we have evaluated and would like to use this is not possible and the main index page would have a mixed listing of the news. But you would still be able to click further down in the menu structure to get each of the news categories.

How big issue is this? We would like to hear you out on this topic.

Personally, I don't have a problem with the little inconvenience it may cause.

It might also be worth mentioning that we will gain lots if we switch to new modern cms and portal system. As we run the site now there is around 10-15 scripts one way another involved to keep it alive; tend to get hard to update and maintain.

Bonjour,

If I understood correctly what you said, for me - at least -, that would be just too bad.
I am not very fond of "overclicking" to get some info.
Most of what I would accept would be a system where I would have to choose what categories I would like to display on the main page and save it in a (or more) profile(s) - pretty much like we have with "My Yahoo". I don't want extra clicks to go into the category and to get the info i "might" be interestted in.
I suppose RSS and such would be "hype" (if I knew how to get them in Mozilla 1.7.12...).
Anyway, I will judge on what the future system will look like ... Any sample ?

Bye for now.

Well, I totally agree with you; the cms system that I've kind of gotten to lik is the Mambo CMS system and I've used it for some other sites as well. The reason why I like it is since of the easy of usage and the features it offers. But, hey I'm open for suggestions and would like to get some.

Kim,

the most important item for me is: Content!
I don*t care about the amount of clicks and I don't care WHAT the site looks like. Of course I enjoy the luxury of having all at once , but if a new CMS helps YOU and the contributors to concentrate on CONTENT, I will vote for that. We definitely need OS2World and I appreciate your efforts.
Thumbs up for the CMS.

Greetings
Thomas

Moving on to a new system would let anyone be able to contribute with articles, news and other information that might be interest of to share. As for now, it's all down to a few people that has to post everything by hand - and it's a drag. Except for picking a new cms system there is a need to convert the current flat text database into new format since I would hate to lose all the old content - also since I once a while are searching for old news and articles.

I've maintained a website for years under OS/2. It's based on the CMS Mambo, (now called Joomla at http://www.joomla.org/), and I use the SMF forum system which is second to none. http://www.simplemachines.org/

I've attached a couple of images to give you an idea.

One thing I'd like to point add. I don't like fixed with websites. I keep my screen resolution at 1600x1200 and most of my browser realestate is wasted on background images/colours left to right. (Themes can control that in some.) So regardless what you decide on, my vote goes for a flexible width setup.

BTW, each of those red news blurbs in the main section are clickable links that take you to the full story.

If you have questions post them here or e-mail me.

Arg! This forum will only let me upload one attachment. So I'll include only the main page.

Well, I knew about the issues regarding Mambo Dev team but I haven't really looked into it. But, it's easy decision to switch to Joomla.org. We might get OT here but where does that leave Miro and the other development group of the "original" Mambo. Would you have any ideas about this Ben?

Well, the original development team is now the Joomla team.

Miro, (the company that initiated and hold the rights to Mambo, (not Joomla), clearly tried to pull a fast one on the development team. Being a smart group they caught onto it right away and decided to start a fork development.

Virtually no one is still with Miro/Mambo. Miro put a a reasonable argument as to why they changed the licensing... to improve Mambo... ahmm... right.

Well, after a while Miro blew the lid off it all and came out in the open as to what they'd been trying to do; gain soul control over Mambo, and shaft everyone else. in the end it had been clearly established that the development team, (Joomla), were right to leave.

I followed it all as it was happening, but I never kept a record of the links. After all was said and done though, I sided with Joomla. There simply was no reason to stick with Miro/Mambo.

Everyone in the extended Mambo family, (those making all the addons and providing support), all went with Joomla. Thus, for all extents and purposes, Mambo is now Joomla... save the name which Miro has control of.

It's interesting to note that as of Oct. 29th, Joomla forums has over 10,000 members. Miro really shot themselves in the foot with this.

Hi,

On the one hand with regards to software, I generally stick with the old saying "If it isn't broken, don't fix it". This is probably one of the reasons that I have maintained using OS/2, even though I know I can find just about eveerything I need on other OSes.

On the other hand, it sounds like the reasons for changing the CMS system at OS/2 world can add benefit - from reduced site maintenance time to other features currently not available. As a result, I'd say go for it.

One thought - during the "migration" process, you might want to set up the "new" system on a trial basis and run it along side the "old" system - at least for a brief trial period to get bugs worked out, etc.

Just my $0.02

I've earlier set up in my mind to upgrade the site to Mambo and now then Joomla and this is what I will stick to. I've also had a deep look into Drupal that gives far more features. But, is really hard to get along with and get started with.

You have always up to date news, software, and it is a really good site.

One thing about the formating of the middle column on the front page. I running my resolution at 1280x1024 or larger and the news text on the page does not scale wasting most of the screen. I great site.

Drupal?

I haven't tried that one...

More features than Joomla you say?

Hmm...

I think I'll take a peak.

*googles Drupal*
