1. USB Zip 100 not recognized |
|
|
| Hi folks, does anyone can help me with my USB Zip100 drive? I now have all the latest device drivers and stuff installed, but the drive is simply not recognized. (LEDs are dead, no sound when attaching drive, etc.) I have a disc inserted and the drive attached when booting, but it doesn't work. I believe the USB drivers to not function properly. I used the PCI bus sniffer and it says "IRQ10, I/O F300h" for the USB controller. It's a UHCI model by the way. The USBUHCD driver (using /V switch) tells me the same resources are recognized and used, but... nothing happens. I have the latest USB drivers (from IBM, tried CWUSB as well), LVM update, Dani drivers but nothing works. Do I need to say that the drive *works* in windoze? Please help - any suggestions are welcome. Eh, BTW: I tried all switches for USBMSD.ADD with no result - except that different drive objects show up in the drives folder according to what I loaded... neither of them actually works. The drive remains "dead". TIA Thomas |

| After the usbmsd driver, try adding these parameters: /floppies:0 /removables:1 /V This could solve a lot... Regards, Jonas Buys. |

Jonas, thanks for the suggestions - I already tried a lot of variations with these switches including /floppies /fixed_disks and so on but none works. The only changes are drive symbols that either show up in the drives folder or not, but nevertheless none of them works when clicked. In the meanwhile I've checked with USBRES from netlabs ad it keeps telling me "no devices found". Seems like that ZIP drive is somehow not recognized (it needs "special" drivers in windoze too) or that USB controller is somehow tricky and not supported... Unfortunately, I have no other USB device to give it a try in order to compare behaviour. But we'll see. If anything fails, I'll take the whole stuff with me at Warpstock Europe and let Markus Montkowski have a look for it! ) Greetings Thomas |

Roger (07 Sep, 2003 02:21): According to Russ Harvey at http://www.russharvey.bc.ca/rhc/os2/remmedia.html you should be using the USBFLPPY.EXE driver with this type of device.
Roger, yes, that's what I suspected too but I was unable to locate that USFLPPY drivers up to now... at eCS site / download area I couldn't find it. Just like that DDPak2 BTW... Can you point me to the file(s)? Thanks. Thomas |

| Thomas, Assuming you have an external USB zip drive, I've read this at IBM... Removable Disks, Universal Serial Bus (USB) Iomega 100MB External USB Zip Drive Last Updated on: 04/06/2001 11:03 AM Product Information Bus Type: USB Product Chip / Technologies: Driver Information This product is supported by IBM. For Technical Assistance, please refer to the following sources: 1. Any README documentation contained within the driver. 2. Technical reference material shipped with your device / system, 3. The Users Guide to OS/2 Warp, and other reference material contained within the OS/2 Warp product, 4. The IBM Software home page for technical support information in your country. The USB Mass Storage Device Driver provides OS/2 support for USB mass storage devices that meet the USB 1.0 or USB 1.1 specification and the USB Mass Storage 1.0 specification. Examples of supported USB mass storage devices include diskette drives, Zip drives, CD-ROM drives, LS-120 drives, and flash memory keys.
The USB Basic Device Support Package is a prerequisite for this device driver. If Base Device Driver FixPak 3 has not been installed, the Enhanced IDE DASD and CDROM Support package must be installed. The most current version of this device driver package is part of the IBM Software Choice offerings. To learn more about IBM Software Choice visit their home page. Download Area and/or Language Package Name Worldwide Package Enhanced IDE DASD and CDROM Support Worldwide Package USB Mass Storage Device Driver The USB Mass Storige driver where IBM is referring to as Software Choice is usbstor.exe... On eCS you will find it via FTP ftp.ecomstation.com/Driver/USB Jan 20 2003 63,144 │ usbstor.exe Hope this helps a bit...

Henk (07 Sep, 2003 14:14): Thomas,Assuming you have an external USB zip drive, I've read this at IBM... ... Hope this helps a bit...
Henk, thanks a lot. Yes, I've got that one too. USBSTOR also includes the TSTUSBC.EXE which I used to verify that the driver loads. Unfortunately, I can't get the drive to become active in *any* way. Right now, I'm wondering whether it might be an USB 2.0 compliant drive... but the 2.0 specification is supported by eCS / OS/2 as well I guess...? I don't have any idea why that piece of #*&§ ! works in windoze but not in a real operating system. I'll give it some more tries, but I'm fed up with it not reacting to anything I try. I would prefer a short blink of the LED altogether with an explosion, crashing airplanes, earthquakes or melting poles - I don't mind - anything would be a progress and better than "nothing" ! Thanks anyway. Thomas |

| Thomas, Hmmm... Under Windows it works, so it's not broken for sure ... Could you show us what you have regarding USB in your config.sys. I've three different USB attached and all recognized by eCS... So perhaps it's something in your config.sys ...
With kind regards,Henk/2

Henk (07 Sep, 2003 15:12): Thomas, ... So perhaps it's something in your config.sys ...
Henk, in the meanwhile I finally was able to dig out USBFLPPY.EXE. Only to find out that it was nothing more than an (actually outdated) version of USBMSD.ADD which I already tried in vain. Basically, I would appreciate someone looking over my config.sys, but simple the problem is... which one dou you like? There'a a set of ten different versions and none of them works - and there's a set of different REMmed USBMSD.ADD entries with different switches in each.. Maybe the better way is to show me YOUR config.sys which actually works...? Another question arises from the notebook itself: It's a quite older model and I don't know anything about that USB chipset built into... obviously it's a UHCI type (that's what windoze tells me too), but... is it really working properly in OS/2 ? Thank you for your help Thomas Greetings Thomas |
