1. PCI Sound Card Recommendations? |
|
|
| Getting ready to replace my trusty Crystal Semiconductor-based ISA sound card with a PCI one. I was looking at the newegg web site and noticed that sound card categories have been broken down by chipset, making it easier for OS/2 or eCS users. Any recommendations? I looked at the OS/2 sound card matrix, but it really doesn't give a rating only whether it works, doesn't, or partially. Thanks in advance. |

| IMO, there is only one PCI card, which will work for sure - SB Live (SB 512, etc.). You can also try some CODECs. At any rate, make sure first that you will have a driver and ask other for their experience with your selection. I am using SB Live in my comp. It works well, both with uniaudio and with its own driver. Both can be found on Hobbes. |

| I've got a Soundblaster Live (5.1), and it works great with the uniaudio drivers. What's great about these cards is you can often find them for less then $10 on e-bay (or new they're not expensive either... I've seen them in stores for a little as $25 new). |

UniAud works with the onboard sound that I have on my main board.

BWG, I was wondering what sound chipset is on your motherboard. Also, do you play .MID besides .WAV? Not that Dos Virtual Machine (VDM) is important, but is there sound in DOS games? Also, how about sound in Winos2? Thanks in advance. |

Thanks for the info. I was wondering how well supported it is ... .WAV, .MID, VDMs, WinOS2? I haven't used uniaud, so I have no experience withit. My other computer has Hercules Gamesurround Fortissimo III 7.1, but it is no longer sold. It used the Crystal Semiconductor chipset, like my ISA card. Thanks. |

Hi, If you would like a PCI with a Crystal sound chip, I will say that I have had good luck with the Hercules Digifire 7.1 . It has a CS4624 chip. I have had the card working with the uniaud driver and with the Crystal driver off the sound card matrix. With the sound card matrix driver, it also installs a driver for Win 16 sessions(WinOS2) and has good .MID support. This card also includes 3 FireWire ports. With luck, in the future, these may be of some value. |

Thanks! That's what I was looking for. Found one on Google, which also showed me Hercules Fortissimo III 7.1, which I have in my other PC. I may go with the Digifire, as this is a dual boot PC. Anyone have comments about: http://www.outletpc.com or http://www.cputopia.com Thanks to everyone who responded ... I have had good luck with Crystal Semiconductor drivers. What ever happened to Timur TabI?? |

I do not usually use DOS or Win-OS2 but I will give them a try. I am looking for the onboard audio chipset.

Regarding a Soundblaster Live 5.1 card... cyberspittle (12 Jul, 2006 04:16):Thanks for the info. I was wondering how well supported it is ... .WAV, .MID, VDMs, WinOS2? Hi, I know it works with .wav's, MP3's, etc. For DOS (VDM) support, I have no clue if this card will work. I havn't tried it in a VDM. I suspect it won't work, but I don't know - I just havn't tried it. For WinOS/2 support, you need to use the Generic WinOS/2 drivers, they work pretty well. You can find them at: http://home.wanadoo.nl/rwklein/index2.htm Or they are also on the eCS 1.2 CD #2 For Midi support, the Uniaudio driver doesn't work. However I've heard that you can get it to work with Timidity for OS/2. http://www.reamined.on.ca/doconnor/timidity.html I tried Timidity once and failed to make it work. However I believe I just didn't do the install correctly as others have reported being able to get it to work. For mixer, I've used LBMix with success. Hope this helps. |

| One again, thanks to everyone. Getting actual feedback is so much more rewarding than just looking at a matrix of cards. |

| Hi, Does anyone have recommendations for a chipset or card (besides the MWave) that support multiple WAV/Digital Audio streams simultaneously? Thanks, Robert |
