Hello everyone;

I am working with a friend to develop a new 4x Space Game that will have versions native to OS/2, Linux, and Windoze.

At this point we are interested in what kind of features people would like to see in a new 4x game?

Hi;

4x means Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate. Games that fall into the Genre are GalCiv2, Stars!, Moster of Orion, Stars Supernova Genesis (in development), etc.

Mentioned games above is some of the games that I enjoy and usually the only genre I fancy. What are your own features and game idea? I mean it might be a bit easier if some lines could be drawn up.

Ah, yes, I suppose it would. Unfortunately my partner is away right now and I am not sure how much I am allowed to talk about at this point.... but I can say that it will be similar to most games in the genre in that there will be technology trees for the different races to research, and the purpose of the game will be domination of the universe (or at least the part of it you are fighting for right now). This domination will not have to be in the form of military might though as your spies and politicians may be able to wheel and deal the universe right into your hands.

We are currently considering making the game have a bit more of a role playing characteristic than many of the game currently on the market. We are not sure what form this will take exactly at this time.

The technology trees will be highly selective, but selection of certain technologies will limit the development in other areas (ie. super weapons of destruction will hinder research into diplomatic relation skills, or something like that).

Unlike GalCiv2 the space battles will not be simple click on events. It is possible that they might be all pregenerated as in Stars! but we are also considering the possibility of have protracted battles where both sides can have up to ... say 10 ... turns during the battle allowing them to change battle plans during the fight and possibly retreat, etc. It is not (at this time) expected to be a live action shooter like StellarFrontiers.

Uhm... I am not sure what else I can say at this time. Once I get the chance to confer with my partner a bit more I will probably post more here so that we can get some quality feedback from everyone.

Well, Im not too much of a 4x game lover, but It will be great that somepart of the game can have an action secuence, like shooting or something like that.

Let me know when you start to make the game to post the news and get some beta testers if you are interested. Plus is always good to keep sending news about a game developement, this can help you if you want to sell it.

Another great game that above sounds like or at least that you should look at is Homeworld. Since the action scenes there when fighting against other space explorers are excellent. And as just suggested here you're able to change the action during the attackas well you also have to pin point each of the battle ships to a target. Sort of like Red Alert where you can group a bunch of tanks to attack a single object, etc.

My apologies for not posting more information recently, but there has been a slight difficulty in the fact that my potential partner and myself are no longer talking. I am continuing to work on the game design and expect to start coding later this spring. I will post any progress that is made on the game when it happens.

Just a quick update note!

Programming of some of the underlying structures and classes has begun. Game development will be slow at this time as I am refreshing my programming skills by participating in the OS/2 (eCS) online programming course.

More news will be posted as progress is made.

Sorry that I have not responded sooner. My first child (Toben Jakob Eli ...) was born at the start of September and I have not had much time to look at my computer recently. I will provide an update on the game by the middle of October and hopefully have a skeleton of a web-page up by the middle of November.

Oh kay! Where to begin?

The game development is progressing slowly, but it is progressing. I have almost finished the design of the Universe class structure, the solar system / planet class structure, and the basic framework for a ship class structure.

I am looking at using a rules development language along the lines of that being implemented for Stars Supernova Genesis. This would allow the players to customize many of the features of the game.

I have not settled on a coordinate system for the game universes and may even let that be a player selectable option.

I have started doing some of the preliminary design work for the development of the player's species in the game.

The list of features to be included and the background behind weapons, social structures, armour, technology, etc. is currently about sixty typed pages that I keep revising each week.

I will be creating a web-page for the project before the middle of November, even if just to use as a place for me to post progress updates and design ideas.

For now the game is called: Guardian Wolves.

I will post again if anything develops in the next little while, and when I get the web-page set up.
