" As of January 1st, 2004 updates to the OS/2 Device Driver Kit
have been discontinued.

I copied this from the site. If one needs the files, it would be good if they were copied before they are gone.

Hi, BigWarpGuy,

I fail to see why IBM does stuff like this to
OS/2 Warp. Are they trying to migrate Warp users to IBM's current favorite flavor of Linux
or migrate their customers to Windows XP ("Xtra Poison)?

I can understand why IBM may not want to hassle with the "onesies and twosies" market but they could at least leave the DDK on
a FTP server somewhere for those who wish to develop drivers for Warp.

I noticed that IBM has also sold most of their PC division to Lenovo, a Chinese company owned by the Communist Chinese government. This is outrageous!

Have the top executives gotten so used to the easy life at the top of IBM that they are just showing up to work to collect a paycheck?

Maybe it is time for a thorough housecleaning at the top levels of IBM.

Or they could upload it or allow it to be uploaded to sites like Hobbes. or OS/2 BBS or other similar site or allow Serenity Systems to have it at their eComStation site.

I agree, IBM would be better off if their were different top executives running the company.

Old news, I commented on this a while ago. My recomendation was for netlabs to mirror the ddk, and as our programmers make improvements to merge that back in. It would not benefit from IBM's offical updates like the old system did, however how much of a contribution that was I will not make an arguement for or against. This has nothing to do with end users being able to access the Device Driver Database or DDP. This is only going to effect people who which to write device drivers based on IBM sources. It has been time for a house cleaning of IBM Executives since the time Lou(probably) took bribes from M$ to try and kill off OS/2!

We already have it archived at the OS2eCS Organization! After the new Hobbes is operational, our next major project is to convert the archive over to a native On-Line Device Driver Library...this will only be available to members.

A few points:

1. I admit that I am still running OS/2 Warp 3 and 4, and havn't had a need to upgrade to ecomstation. Having said that, from what I recall reading a while back, I believe Serenity has the rights to distribute the DDK with eComStation. I had thought that the DDK was included with eComStation on one of its CD's, but since I havn't actually upgraded to eComStation I can't confirm this. There is a note regarding this on a review in a back issue of the Voice newsletter at:

http://www.os2voice.org/VNL/past_issues/VNL0101H/vnewsf6.htm

2. As for uploading it to a public FTP site, IBM may have considered this, I don't know. From what I recall, while the majority of the DDK was copywrite IBM, some of it was copywrite Microsoft (I know it included a copy of Microsoft C 6.0 and Microsoft Assembler). This may prevent IBM from releasing the whole DDK to a public site (at least the Microsoft stuff), I don't know.

3. As for other sites just putting it online, I'd express caution to anyone thinking of this. IBM still owns the copywrite on most of the DDK, some of it owned by Microsoft too. Unless a site has direct permission from IBM to put this online, doing so without permission to distribute would open the operator(s) of that site up to potential legal troubles.

As a result of all of this, I think the best bet would be for Serenity to host the DDK as a part of its eComStation offerings, if it doesn't already.

Just my thoughts.
