I installed DSS a couple weeks ago, and after some trouble with the WPS, I started from scratch with a fresh reinstall of my system, then reapplied DSS. Everything seemed to be working very nicely for a 4-5 days until yesterday when I called my faxmodem from a remote location in order to check for messages via Pmfax -- and PMFax didn't answer. When I got back to my office, my computer was in some very deep state of hibernation, apparently -- I had to C-A-D to get it back up. (Left no entry in popuplog.os2, either.) I've uninstalled DSS at this point.

Was that a bug or a feature?

That is, I hadn't intended to put my whole system into standby. I didn't know that DSS had this capability, but regardless, I couldn't get my system back except through a reboot, which of course, I didn't wish to do. For the moment, I'm back to using blackout.exe, which has many quirks but fails less spectacularly.

If you happen to have an nVidia graphics card, don't enable "DPMS Suspend" or "DPMS Off".

Hm, sorry, I've noted this thread a bit late.

It's good to see that the problem is no more, but I don't really understand what the problem was and how it was resolved. So, could you please guys describe it a bit more?

Rudi, is there a known problem with nvidia cards + DSS? What is it, and why disabling DPMS solves is? (btw, do you have to disable DPMS in DSS or in BIOS?)

Raphael, what did you change in BIOS, and did it really solve the problem?

Thanks,
Doodle

Hi Doodle,

Yes, forgot it ? SciTech confirmed that SNAP might enter an infinite loop on certain nVidia cards, when an app is mucking with the (hardware-) mouse pointer while "DPMS suspend" or "DPMS off" is active. I don't think, that this got fixed in the meanwhile, since Steve considered it a low priority and we all know, what happened inbetween...

Actually I was referring to the settings page in DSS rather than the BIOS. So I'm not 100% convinced, that the original poster has really found a solution (given this is the cause of his problem) or if the event described above just didn't yet happen. And as noted before, "DPMS standby" is O.K.

oic.

well, yeah, in that case, maybe I didn't solve my problem. but at least I haven't had it in the six days I made the change! I was actually somewhat puzzled when I went into the BIOS and found only three options -- I guess it was "Blank screen," "DPMS Standby" and "DPMS Off" -- I switched it to "Blank screen."

at the moment, I do have everything checked on the DPMS settings page. no problems yet, but if anything happens, I'll return the BIOS to the way it was, and uncheck all but DPMS Standby.
