1. OS/2 Warp 4 on VMWare

Hi

I have read everywhere that OS/2 Warp 4 will not work on WMWare, however I have got it working. I am on SUSE Enterprise Desktop 10 with VMWare Server 1.0.1, all you need to do is use CD images and Floppy disk images. So, what I did was took my floppys and "dd if=/dev/fd0 of=os2disk1.img" and created the 3 install floppys needed for install, I also made an ISO image of the CD. When you make VMachine select "other" as guest OS and make sure the drive is less than 2 gigs. In VMWare select the floppy drive to be that image you made of the first disk and start it up, when it asks you for the second disk just edit the floppy drive settings. Also make sure you got the CD drive pointing to the ISO image. It should install with no problems but on first boot, it takes at least 10 minutes to load. Now the problem is that there is no VGA driver for the VMWare, however the network card works, it got a DHCP ip address from the server.

Yes, most of the time that will be the case; notwithstanding, if you check the VMWare forums, you will also find some tips similar to what you have mentioned.

Fizx however I have got it working. I am on SUSE Enterprise Desktop 10 with VMWare Server 1.0.1,

...the latter is available as a free download from the VMWare site, right?

By the way, how do you like your XGL?

[...]

Do not get me wrong. I am not trying to diminish your achievement --you are persistent against all odds and will not accept the status quo. OS/2 needs people like you who are able to make bridges with the open source side.

Since no one has said anything by now, I will,

Congratulations (sincerely) and keep up the hacking.

El Vato.

Thanks, I just got real annoyed about everyone saying it cant be done.

XGL is good but I think its over rated, needs to work in KDE

Yes it is with the free VMWare, you need to sign up tho, they just ask you questions and then they will give you a serial number.
Its this one:

Now, I need to get OS/2 in SVGA mode and get it to connect to the internet. Its a very unique GUI, I like it

Cheers,

Fizx

As Fizx replied, the server to generate your own images is free to download (after you register with VmWare) --as opposed to having only the player.

The only issue that I exerienced in the past (with a dual CPU system) is that sometimes the VmWare server needs to recompile its module into your Linux kernel (on the initial installation of the VmWare server software). Hence, having your appropriate kernel sources available and in the correct path will assure you success.

This OS/2 on Linux's VmWare server set-up actually may speed the OS/2 kernel and subsystems development (and native Java) efforts since changes can be tested without rebooting.

...and if Fizx liked the OS/2 GUI, what would he say of Java 3D OS/2 environment modeled after Sun's Looking Glass project ?
