| I have 3 mini-itx boards on order from http://www.mini-itx.com . They also sell power supplies for these boards that do not take up much room and 'snap' onto the board with a power adapter that plugs in (similar to the ones that come with notebook computers). Is this powerful enough to run a mini-itx board that runs eComStation, a hard drive and a cd or dvd drive?

Hi, BigWarpGuy, Which model boards are you buying and on each board what kind of memory, add-on cards and drives do you plan to use? |

| "VIA EPIA 5000 Fanless Motherboard; The reason why we're here. The EPIA 5000 Mini-ITX motherboard features embedded onboard graphics, audio, 10/100 Ethernet, USB and TV-Out support all in a 6.75" x 6.75" (170x170mm) package. Sporting a 533Mhz fanless Eden CPU, this little number looks striking in all situations - be it next to your TV, inside a cigar case, or at the beach (inside a remote control car). Two PC133 SDRAM DIMM memory slots. DIMMs here. " This is the board. I ordered three of them. I will try to use them with a hard drive(IDE), and a cd drive (I have a couple of extra ones but it would be nice to get a half height or slim drive but they are are usually more than I am willing to pay for). I have some DIMMs (there are two with 128 meg each and some others). http://www.mini-itx.com/store/default.asp?c=10¤cy=2 I am thinking of the 'Lex 60W PSU and DC-DC Converter Kit' ("Suitable for powering all standard Mini-ITX boards, including the EPIA MII. The DC-DC Converter can be fitted in the wee-est of crannies. Universal 110-240V PSU, DC-DC Converter board and 12V connector, ATX power connector and wiring loom. Notes: These PSUs are only 60W - we recommend a low power 3.5in hard drive (or 2.5in hard drive) and a slimline optical drive - full size CD drives will not work with this board! The power plug is UK-style, but is easily removed and replaced with a suitable localised plug - the power "brick" is universal and will work anywhere."

| http://store.ituner.com/ituner/pw70a.html I was given this link for a 'snap in' power supply. It is PW70ARegular price: $54.95Sale price: $45.95 . It costs less than the one at Mini-Itx but it does not (IIRC) come with an external power converter (perhaps one could use a universal adapter?). --- BigWarpGuy - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - OS/2 Warp-ed/eComStation-ed to the very end. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - |

| At one point the company I work for was looking at building a tablet PC from the components you mentioned. The 60W itx power supply is fine for a small system. The power supply takes a single +12 to operate. We did have some trouble with it when we hooked up a embedded 14" LCD display (it would flicker) to it, but it seemed to work fine otherwise. I never had a chance to try OS/2 on it, since the project wasn't my baby. We had the mainboard, laptop HDD, touchscreen controller, and IDE CD-ROM drive attached with no trouble. I did note that if you yank the power away from the power supply while the board is on, it would take 30 minutes before you could get it to boot again. This could have been a side-effect of a co-worker shorting it out accidentally. We usually powered it from another PC power supply, or a bunch of sealed lead-acid batteries. The board we were working with had one PCI slot which we never used.. As long as you stick with all of the embedded parts, you should be fine. |

| Nice to hear that you found the components that you needed; actually couple of weeks ago I ordered a VIA EPIA-M1000 board that have a 1GHz CPU so it's not fanless. I was kind of fast to order so missed out that I should go for the 500Mhz instead to get a fanless system. But, tuned down the CPU fan with resistors so it's no totally silent and as; but here is what I got of components: The board itself; Via EPIA-M with 1Ghz CPU: and for the housing I went for a Morex Cubid 3677 (internal DC feeds 80w): one important thing when using the ITX-mini case is to pick the low profile memory, else you will never get the system together: and here is what it looks like when you mounted everything in the case including a 2.5" disk: /Kim |

| Instead of just using the OS/2 Warp ver 4 box, I was thinking of creating a 'label' (use one of the paper size printer sticker sheets) to create a eCS cover for the box. This would show that it is running eCS instead of OS/2 Warp. Now to find a the full page sticker sheet for my printer and a good image to use with it.

| Kim, Those are some cool cases. I went with one from AMS gITX CF-668 (http://www.amselectronics.com/Products/PC_Servers/CF-668.html). However, I did find the case's blue power LED to be too bright in low light settings. I also didn't care for the internal power supply as it was loud, due to the use of 40mm fans. I have the same VIA EPIA motherboard and found the CPU noise acceptable. However, by using an adapter and using a larger fan to cool the CPU, would be quieter with a slower rotational speed. The low memory is a good idea, as it allows one to fint the motherboard in lower profile cases. The AMS case I have is low profile, and I am considering installing a low profile Hauppage WinTV-PVR-150MCE l.p., but am unable to determine if it works with eCS (http://www.hauppage.com/Pages/products/data_pvr150lp.html). Finding low profile PCI cards is a real challenge. |

| Regarding the Hauppauge PVR-150; isn't that board using the same chipset as the PVR-250/350? Is, it should work. |

| Hi Kim, I think it should work also, but what bothers me is the "MCE" (Media Center Edition) in the product's title. If it is a modified version of the 150, does it have changes in the chipset? I could just get it and find out, and if it doesn't work out, perhaps return it or find a Windows user to pawn it off on. |

| Not sure where you're located, but I would suggest that you call Haupauge technical support line either in UK or US they usually are really fast to pick of the phone and would be able to give you a prompt answer. I only have positive feedback regarding thoose guys. |

| Hi Kim, That's an excellent idea. When I get close to a decision, I'll ask what are the differences between it and the 150. |

The PVR150 and PVR500 cards currently don't work with EmperoarTV. I'm considering to add support for them, but I cannot guarantee anything. Kim is right, when he says that the encoder chip is the same as on the 250/350, but the surrounding chips are different. BTW, the main difference between the MCE and the non-MCE versions is, that the latter comes with a remote control and (for 150) don't has the FM radio. The MCE version are supposed to use the remote control as well as companion software present in MCE. Thus, they don't bring their own remote and they ship with less (W*****s) - software. |

| Pitty that Hauppauge keeps on making small changes on the boards, ie I got the Hauppauge PVR-board... but I could more less just put in the trash since I haven't used it for more a year or so.... |

| http://www.mini-itx.com/projects.asp The case I will be doing was influenced by the ones at the above link. They are non-traditional cases. There is - lower on site - a similar case (thin case) as shown in the above posts. It is by HP (IRIC).

The step between your PVR "classic" and the newer PVR x50 is not just a small change. It's switch to a new board generation. The change from the 250/350 to the 150/500 product line will lower the total costs of the boards. This is the major reason, why the 150, which from the users view is very similar to the 250, has a lower price. BTW, it's not Hauppauge, who makes the core designs. To be honest, I don't think they are able to. They get reference implementations from Conexant, who manufactures the chips, and apply minor modifications (like adding a remote control or a configuration EEPROM). Some people say, that the 150 gives a better picture than the 250, but there are also a lot of people (especially in PAL countries) who are not so happy with the (W******s). drivers/software suppiled by Hauppauge. |

| Well, the small changes made is enought so that the old classic PVR version of the board isn't supported within OS2 (only the older projects) or Linux (no support witin MythTV) for that matter anymore... and yes they have had their fair share of bad drivers; but usually in periods. I've also got the old ISA Hauppauge board at home (somewhere) that came along with the IBM Aptivas (multimedia version). So as a long time user of their board there have been ups and downs. |

Even though I have not tested it myself, the low profile version of the PVR150 is now supposed to work with EmperoarTV (1.08o and later). |

| Good news about the 150lp. I have put on hold dure to current work requirements. I am still interested in the topic of this thread ... power supplies. I hope to use an external power supply to replace the noisy internal one I currently have. Unfortunately, I am unsure on the process of doing so. |
