BigWarpGuy (02 Jul, 2006 22:54): Are there any affordable color laser printers that work with eComStation? Are there any recomendations?
Good evening! I recently a purchased a Dell 3100cn. It is an above average printer when used with eCS. I evaluated the following printers that supported Postscript or PCL: Brother HL-2700CN http://www.brother.ca/en/products/description.asp?Prodid=1185&features=on Dell 3100cn http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/print_3110cn?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs Lexmark C510 http://www.lexmark.com/lexmark/product/home/899/0,6970,204816596_653293787_239082371_en_0_1,00.html discontinued Lexmark C50N? http://www.lexmark.com/lexmark/product/home/435/0,6970,204816596_653293763_728193459_en_0_1,00.html Minolta 2450 - Konica Minolta http://printer.konicaminolta.com/products/color/index.asp OkidataC5400 Okidata C5500? http://www.okidata.com/mkt/html/nf/c5500nhome.html Samsung CLP-550 Samsung CLP-650? http://www.samsung.com/Products/PrinterandMultifunction/ColorLaserPrinters/CLP_650NXAA.asp My priorities were initial cost, cost of consumables, duplexing, and a 500 sheet paper tray. Only the Dell and Samsung had the best combination of costs for these items. I selected the Dell because the Samsung's integrated duplexer was offset by the high cost of consumables (toner, fuser, waste tank, photo/transfer unit). The only drawbacks to the Dell during setup and use are: The PPD file must be modified to include a Job Control Language section. The Accept button on the display must be pressed twice whenever the manual paper feed is used. The paper guides on the manual paper feed must be adjusted when switching between paper and envelopes because the form must be centered on the feed tray. Currently, you can purchase a factory refurbished 3100cn with a one year warranty from the Dell Outlet for $300.00 U.S. I recommend an upgrade to the 64Mb memory if you intend to print any color images at the high quality setting. Kingston and Crucial both sell memory modules for this printer. Have a safe and joyous day! Thanks to Gary for the note on the Dell 3100cn color laser. There are, however, no link for the printer driver. Please provide a link, or enclose your own adapted driver (there are quite many who have bought this printer, and info. on how to get it to work under eCS will be appreciated.

I don't think Dell makes the printer. Perhaps if you find who makes it, one can find the driver for it?

| Big Warp Guy, thanks for the tip. I tried some of the drivers that are currently shipped under OS/2, and found that the Lexmact C720 driver works reasonably well. Most PDF files, those Lotus FreeLance Graphics, and Open Office (1.15) files I tested printed fine. Not a perfect driver, but for most parts it gets the job done.

Eirik, I apologize for the late reply. School has started and I am swamped. I have attached the PPD file that I use for the Dell 3100cn. Have a joyous day! Gary |
