1. eCS on a Gateway 200 S? |
|
|
| I just recently ordered a Gateway 200 series notebook computer. Can one install eCS 1.1 onto it? It is a newer computer which is unusal for me since all my current ones are rather outdated. They said the hardware warranty would not be voided if I installed another os (other than the one it comes with) but they would not be able to provide support for it (mentioned I would have to re-install Win to do that). htttp://www.gateway.com

| You didn't give much to go on - a list of the specs, or a direct link to them would have been nice. The link is http://products.gateway.com/products/GConfig/prodDetails.asp?system_id=200s&seg=hm followed by selecting "full specification" further down. I also looked through the support area for specs. It's not obvious, but I think this machine is http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/Gateway/200ARC/3501609sp83.shtml The reason it's not obvious, is that the naming is not consistent between the sales and support areas. A quick look at them: - Chipset is Intel® 855GM Chipset with no mention of a separate video chipset. This means it uses the built-in video of this chipset. There isn't any support for this video, but SNAP will probably run it in VESA VBE mode. This means it will not be accelerated. So the performance might not be very good. - The chipset also says "Full ACPI". This would probably mean you are out of luck. But, the second page says ACPI 2.0 and APM 1.2. Because of the latter, you might be in luck. OS/2 doesn't support a purely ACPI system (ACPI sets a lot of details like IRQ). But, as it also support APM 1.2, chances are the BIOS will supply hardware details in a way that OS/2 can handle. But, it's not guaranteed. - Sound is "Sigmatel STA9752 AC97 Audio Codec". UniAud does support this. And, if it doesn't the UniAud developer will try to sort it out. - The modem is unlikely to work. - There isn't enough info on the network card to know if it will - I think the Wireless network is either one that works or is in the beta driver that's around - The PCMCIA chipset is not listed as supported at http://www.os2warp.be/index2.php?name=pcmciaentry That's the best I can do without having the machine in my hands, or at least in someones hands who can try things. One final comment: Why Gateway? IBM's Thinkpad R51 seems to be about the same, and, there have been reports of OS/2 working on them.

| Thanks for the information. It is appreciated. Why Gateway? I was there and they have financing available. I think IBM might have leasing but I am not definite on it. I do not know if they have financing (being able to pay so much a month for so many months). I will receive the notebook computer on the 9th of July. I will try it then. Thanks again for the information. I apologize for not providing more information. Once it is in hand, I will have more detailed information on it.

| How did it work out with the laptop Tom? Also I noticed that the system came with a Intel wifi 2200 card... that won't work in OS2 but at least you have a mini pci slot so you can exchange the board to the IBM Wifi cards. I'm on to it to order some more cards, so let me know if you're interested of a card and I'll add an extra card into the order! |

| How much will the IBM mPCI Wifi cards be? I might be interested in one for my T20 (if I can get antennae...) Stuart |

| I've found cards for $35 might be that I can get a better price, but that is the currently price + freight from the US to Europe around $20 - $50 depending on service used. |

I have not tried it installing eCS on my Gateway 200S. I still have it with WinXP since the sitebuilder software I use to build/update my site at http://tomleem.homestead.com only works with Windows. Once it is paid off and I have obtained another notebook for the above purpose, I wil try eCS on my Gateway 200s.
