1. No More Sound/Audio? |
|
|
| When my computer hard drive died, I replaced it with a 80 gig hard drive. I was able to install eCS 1.1 onto it (three partitions). I am working on getting the sound to work (why try a dvd movie in the dvd drive if I have no sound?). I tried the UniAud drive at http://www.ecomstation.com and from where one downloads WarpVision. Neither seem to work. It worked before the hard drive crashed. The audio is (or was) supported by the UniAud drivers. Any help will be appreciated. I am still planning on re-installing the RSJ CDWriting software to see if it works with the DVD-RW drive (IIRC it was dvd-rw or dvd-ram, one of them).

What audio chip /card do you have in the system and/or could it be that the audio volume is set to zero; I have had that once on a laptop - took me a while to realize |

IIRC - it is an SiS onboard audio chipset (I have to check; it is at home and I am at work). I tried playing sounds in the 'sound' icon of the system setup. No sound. I will check the volume control to see if it is low or if the 'systems sounds' is unchecked. Thanks for the information/help. It is appreciated.

| I will check them out. Thanks for the information and links. I am beginning to think it is more than just drivers and might be something other that is giving me problems. I tried installing StarOffice 5.1 and it froze my computer (twice). I tried to install the uniaud from the 2nd eCS cd and the computer froze when it tried installing the multimedia support from the 1st eCS cd. Could it be the main board or the audio driver or something else?

| BWG, I would hate to think that you have a hardware conflict. Maybe check BIOS settings ... don't give IRQ to VGA, turn off IRQ/Ports for unneeded serial ports, etc. for example. |

When I booted my computer last night, it froze after the initial screen and before eCS symbol appeard in the upper left corner. The on/off switch did not work and the reset button only lead to the same problem/freeze area. I have a power manager (where one can plug in devices and turn on/off those devices from a central location. I turned the whole thing off and started it again. It was able to boot to eCS. When printing an e-mail, the computer froze. The same thing happened with the on/off power switch on the pc. I was able to reboot it with the power manager and it checked the hard drive. I think it is more the mother board than anything else. I will try to get another mother board/cpu.

last updated at 02 Feb, 2005 10:06 (1 times) Could it not just be bad memory? If you have some spare memory just try to exchange; many years ago I had an OS2 Warp 4 system where Windows worked fine but OS2 wouldn't boot up as supposed and it turned out to be bad memory... and crashed directly during kernal boot where it seems that your system as well crashes. |

I will check it out. I do not have any spare memory; at least not in the size that I am currently using. Thanks for the information/help.

My computer would freeze up just when the computer would get to the starting sound (just as the icons and eCS-center would appear on the screen). I had installed a more powerful power supply system (350 instead of 300). It would freeze at the same spot. I had disabled the onboard sound thinking it was the problem. I had tried a Sound Blaster Live 24bit PCI card but there was no sound. I tried the PCI Crystal chipset audio card. It would freeze as the starting sound would come up. I could not get past this.I took out the card and enabled on the onboard sound. It works. It does not freze up The sound is great. IMO - the audio card was the problem.

Actually, it sounds like there must have been an IRQ or DMA conflict...I'd have moved those cards around to different slots, changed what IRQ's the BIOS would allow, etc. |

| When I tried to boot to a command line, it would say there was a driver error and tell me to 'ctl-alt-del' to reboot. It did not say which driver had the error (I tried to do 'e config.sys' from the command line). I did not think of switching the cards around. There were only three slots (IIRC - one agp and two pci) on the PCChips board.
