| Hi I'm having confusing problems with my use of domain host and independent ISP providers (such as Juno or Basicisp). Background: I've owned my domain for years and used it for years without any connect problems - the ISP provider and domain host were the same business.. 10 days ago I switched to a separate domain host and separate ISP provider. The dns change has propagated throughout the network. Now: 1 to several times a day, when using PMMail and attempting to send or receive email from one of my email accounts on the domain I get an information message: Resolving POP Hostname, And, as just happened, if I go back and simply try to retrieve my email, again, then it works. At, the same time, but not always, if I attempt to connect to my web pages to update them, I can get errors from Firefox, such as: I can ping the domain and that works. I don't have a firewall or a proxy and as I mentioned earlier, I've never run into these problems before - not once in over 10 years. Because I thought the problem was ISP related I have already canceled 1 ISP account - and now I'm having the same problem on another, so it doesn't seem to be ISP caused. I'd appreciate any comments, etc. to help me start to resolve this. Thank you, Firefox 2.0 |

What I would look at is your DNS settings. Be sure that all the DNS servers you are trying to use are valid DNS servers, and accept connections from you. You can test each of the DNS servers listed in your TCP/IP settings by specifying them on the nslookup command:code: That IP happens to be one of Juno's public nameservers. When I try this, it is refused, because I am not connecting using Juno. Choose names to lookup that have nothing to do with the ISP's and domain services you are using. If a lookup fails, take that server out of the list. Even if they do work, be sure to check with the ISP what they should be and put all of them in. |

| Thanks for the advice. Not sure I'm qualified enough to understand it. I tried your nslookup on. I'm not connected with Juno, but it apreared to eork and gave me a response like code: I tried some other domains and rec'd good responses. This evening I've had mixed results. I'm correcting some errors on the website and one time or another I'm not able to connect. Just doing a reload a couple of times and all of a sudden I'm connected. It doesn't make sense to me. - Seems I should fail every time or never. Dave

| To further confuse the issue: I just rebooted. After dialing in (with InJoy domain nameserver set to 0.0.0.0) I did the following: code: Maybe 5 seconds elapsed between nslookup attempts. Would the fact that my domain move to a new provider happened within the last 10 days or so? Are there delays in name propagation? Dave Palmer |

| Well the problem is clearly that doing DNS lookups works intermittently. The question is whether the trouble is in your ISP's DNS server, or with the DNS configuration of the folks now hosting your domains. If it is your ISP's server, it is because it is busy or no longer intended for use, meaning you need to update your settings, make sure you have all the DNS servers they provide you, and put that failing one at the bottom of the list if at all. Those settings are found in the TCP/IP Configuration notebook. If they expect to configure that automatically for you, that needs to be set. You will know it is your ISP's DNS server if this problem happens on any domain, not just yours. If the problem is only seen on your domains, then the DNS server for your domains is probably misconfigured. This is all too common. Go to http://www.dnsstuff.com/ and you'll find a number of cool tests to tell you if something is wrong. Then you can contact them, tell them which test is failing, and from there they should be able to fix it. |

This is actually not a good response. It's telling you they don't answer this question, but you need instead to go to GTLD-SERVERS.NET for the answer. I didn't mean for you to actually use that nameserver (in fact it may not even be the server used by Juno customers), the point was just the syntax, so you can test the DNS servers in the list that your system is using. |

| This problem has "gone away". After trying many tweaks (Firefox keep-alive, 'hosts' file, etc.) I gave up. The nslookup provided evidence that the domain was here and then it was gone and then it was back again. My wife's XP system didn't have this trouble. So I chalked this up to OS2 -etc. I nicely suggested to the host provider that we end our relationship - and presto they found, and I quote: "There was minor error in conf entry which has been corrected from serverend." I had asked for more info but they did not provide it. Regardless of what it was (minor error) it is fixed and I can reliably connect everytime. One thing in their favor, they never blamed OS/2 - which was nice.
