XWP allows boot logos and comes with 3. I modified the Penguin from OS2 Warp to eComStation. I started with the eComStation v2 logo from David. This is not nearly as good as other graphics I have seen here but maybe others will come up with other ideas.
Unfortunately I have to upload as a jpeg as bmp is not allowed. To use as a bootlogo it must be converted back to uncompressed bmp 1.3 (which the conversions will likely cause even more quality loss than I already had in the creation).

Since the penguin is (more or less) associated with Linux, wouldn't it cause some confusion if it is used with eComStation? OS/2-eCS.Org has a design that uses a seal. I will look for a copy/file of it.

It might, I always liked the OS/2 Warp logo on the Penguin co-opting it so I wanted to eCS-ize it.

While I could probably put some of those to use for this purpose I think we are thinking of different things. If you have xwp and go to the desktop properties, there is a Workplace Shell boot logo (I should have added Workplace shell to the original description but I hadn't looked at that field... just the text below that).

Since Penguin is "cute and agile" i prefer it over the seal that is usually "heavy and slow"... i think the mascot topic has been a point where we haven't been able to produce one that delivers the agile-secure-confidece precense of eCS/OS2.
I think a lion could be a better one.

abwilis,

I like it a lot. However, you may want to use a different penguin, than the Linux Penquin. Keep up the good work. Maybe eCS (OS/2) needs a mascot? Linux has it's penguin, FreeBSD has it's d(a)emon, SuSE had it's chameleon. Personally, I like the penguin, maybe a polar bear? Or, is that a Coca-cola mascot? I think you made a good point with your graphic. Let's all get this (eCS) ball rolling. (AmigaOS already has a ball as it's mascot). Keep the graphics coming!

Both the penguin and the seal are agile in the water but not so on land. I prefer the seal (sea lion?) since I consider the penguin already spoken for.

Coca Cola uses both a penguin and a polar bear in their commercials but the polar bear is more associated with Coca Cola. It is that Coca Cola would put the penguin and polar bear together since neither would meet in the wild (from opposite [litterally] ends of the world).

Doing a search shows that everyone was trying to kill Art the Elephant. Hard question about Art though. Art was specifically an IBM thing in that IBMers working on and with OS/2 chose a dancing elephant for a mascot because of
"Some years ago, someone in the computer industry said that it
would be as hard to get a good personal computer from IBM as it would be to teach an elephant to tap-dance. Shortly thereafter, IBM introduced the IBM PC, and set a new industry standard. Since that time, tap-dancing elephants have been a kind of running joke within IBM."
So while I like to hold to tradition in some ways, I am not sure that Art is a tradition that eCS shares... other than to share its common heritage with OS/2. I can't find a good picture of Art though so far anyway so it is somewhat moot.
The lion pics of mine was created for the transparent use... the eCS on the second one is transparent as well (the oval around it was supposed to be but really isn't).
I like the mountain lion as it is stealthy... hard to find like OS/2 users
Maybe a grizzly bear... powerful and no fear and isn't all wet

OK. I think we are on a roll. this brainstorming is going to find the right one for a mascot. I think the mountain lion was a mascot for Mercury (remember the cat sitting on the Ford-Lincoln-Mercury sign? Also, MGM uses the roaring lion at the beginning of it's movies. I personally like the mountain lion (AKA couger) as it is a native american animal. How about a panther? It is a pretty cool cat. A relative of the leopard and at night, well, need I say more? Those eyes would be cool!

Combine an elephant with a seal and one gets an elephant seal(?).

Since the registration elephant was so difficult to get rid of, perhaps it could symbolise how stubborn OS/2-eCS is in not going away?

The coccoon had 'OS/2. on it and the wings of the butterfly had 'eCS' on it (actually the eCS ball as the head). What do you think? Inquiring minds want to know.

This thread has inspired me to an article that will (hopefully) be published in the upcoming edition of the VOICE newsletter. And I have found a GREAT mascot too... you'll be surprised.
Seriously: I urge you to keep on with that topic, and maybe set up (or suggest to Kim) a poll about "what mascot suits best".

Go on!

A Mouse?

OS/2's development was done in Boca Raton, Florida. Raton is Spanish for mouse.

OS/2 introduced powerful use of the mouse to IBM's DOS userbase.

A mouse lives a small, quiet existence, yet terrifies the elephant (at least in the cartoons).

A mouse is aggressively pursued by predators. (Microsoft is a predatory creature.)

A mouse can live without much problem in about any environment and find its sustenance. (OS/2 now feeds quite well on outside technology.)

No matter how hard people try to kill off the mice, they are always still around, somewhere.

The mouse is generally looked down upon, yet is quite a clever, yet simple animal.

Mice are cute.

Why not a mouse? A certain man named Walt Disney built an empire on one. http://www.disney.com There is also a mouse as part of the 'Tom and Jerry Show'. http://www.tomandjerrycartoons.com/

How about a rabbit? The are also cute and cuddly and quite proliferic.

Of the 'Tom and Jerry Show', I have been more for the cat since we both have the name 'Tom'. While MTM made shows, they used a cat (with a different custome depending on the show) in a similar manner to MGMs lion.

Hi,
well rodents are a good idea I believe. But then, I would vote in favor of a rat. "raton" and talking of the most adaptive animals - rats will survive even a nuclear war I guess. They're the #1 survivors... well, except for cockroaches perhaps.

Also, I personally like racoons a lot, and why not a beaver? (Racoons are already in use IIRC but I don't remember what/who that was...)

Why not Phoenix or some equivalent ?
Is it too late for adding to the pool?
Said to live for 500 or 1461 years (depending on the source), the phoenix is a bird with beautiful gold and red plumage. It always arises from its ashes. (Don't you think about os/2?)
The bird was also said to regenerate when hurt or wounded by a foe, thus being almost immortal and invincible.

As a mythology symbol it got different meanings in different part of the world, but usually positive and it compares in fairy tales, music works, film, cartoons (star trek too, I'm told).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenix_(mythology)

On one hand it has faboulose meanings and implications all over the world, on the other hand it may be it has been already too much used, also as a mascot.
It has already been used as a name for betas of actually called firefox browser.
Many USA places are called Phoenix, too.
But we discussing about a mascot, not the name!

There are many kinds of picture, (also stylish http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bennu)
Whath about?

BWG,

I accidently discovered a demo CD-ROM for Warp 4, and besides the elephant on it, is a "ball" that is the spokesperson for the CD-ROM. Of course, AmigaOS already has a ball. But, eCS has it's weird 3-pronged ball, so maybe that is it.

Personally, I would prefer an animal.

I remember it as part of an IBM screen saver. It had an 'eye' for the I and a bee for the B. The m was the M. It floated around on the screen and eventually formed eye bee m. A bee would be great since it was used by IBM.

Still hope its not to late for a new suggestion...
How about a Tribble?
Its
.) cosy
.) sweet
.) lovely
and still a menace to the rest of the universe.
It starts with only a few, but after a short time...

Well, I had to google this one since I didn't know what Tribble was and my dictionary didn't know either. So then it's great that we got Wiki. Only worry I would have if Paramount didn't agree to use one of their trademarks.

It was a very popular episode of the original Star Trek series; The Trouble with Tribbles. It was funny. If they allowed IBM to use 'Warp' in the OS/2 name, perhaps they would allow tribbles to be allowed as the mascott for eCS? The downside is it is just a ball of fur.

Actually, part of IBM's marketing woes was that Paramount didn't let them use Warp. Therefore, Warp was as in bent and not as in speed. Of course, we wouldn't want our mascot beamed to a Klingon ship where they would be "No tribble at all".

Why did anybody think about octopus, that is the only true multitasking animal and clever!!

bye Onlineuser2

PS In any way, the logo importance is the meanings communication.
The design style communicates too (modern, friendly, amusing, reliable, witty ...).

Folks,

I just wanted to say THANKS!
I'm not kidding! There is much more about a mascot than just "oh, that's a cuddly|cool|hot mascot".

Go on!
Greetings
Thomas

Hi Thomas,
today the new Voice newsletter was published. I was expecting (and eagerly waiting) to see your mascot proposal... but saw nothing on the newsletter. So what happened? Will you reveal your mascot proposal elsewhere?

Thankyou
Bye

Hi Cris,

that was subject to the decision of the editor-in-chief.
I would have loved to see the article in time with the thread here at os2world, but he had to postpone this for the next issue (which will be hopefully in time).
The reason is that I had another article about Warpstock Europe from organizers view and there was yet another one about the event from visitors view - these have to be published first, else there would be too much time between the event and the article.

In addition, VOICE has to check for potential copyright infringements and check if someone might feel "offended" by my (partly) sarcastic speech. You know - laws and so... not funny, I can understand their decision.

If all fails, I will put it online somewhere else. But I don't think it'll be necessary. BTW you don't have to wait for my proposal in order to "decide" for a mascot. My proposal was kind of ironical (thus, not a serious proposal). Anyway, I think the article is quite funny. Hope to see it published next month. Sorry guys.

And thanks for your interest!!!

Greetings
Thomas

So far the elephant seems to be getting the most points. I wonder how difficult it would be to do a stylised elephant?

As far as I remember, some kind of an elephant is used as a PosgreSQL logo?

http://www.postgresql.org/ It does show an elephant at the site.

The dolphin is second in getting votes. Is anyone else using a dolphin?

I should have known since I get the MySQL news e-mail.

The mountain lion or puma is third. Hopefully no one else is using it else we run out of animals on the list.

The butterfly is fourth but MSN uses it in its commercial (a stylised one).

I wish the manatee was on the list.

Mostly because the entire thread kind of morphed into something larger after I started it.
XWP ships with desktop bootlogos, and one of those is a Penguin with the OS/2 Warp logo in the belly (basically co-opting the linux penguin). I edited it and changed it to eCS instead of Warp and put it up to see if anyone else had created any of these desktop bootlogo's. It then kind of morphed into a thread on mascot's... largely from the same type of messages at the beginning of this thread as this one

With 359 votes so far, the elephant is still ahead. Can one animal/mascot represent more than one group? Perhaps if it was drawn differently than the other one(s)?
