| MS has a program that is MSDiagnose. It detects what hardware there is and what version of drivers there is. Is there a similar program for OS/2-eCS? I tried the hardware manager but it does not see the audio chipset on the notebook computer. I have not been able to get the sound to work on my Thinkpad 760EL. I have tried the OS/2 drivers for it from IBM and the universal audio driver but both crash the computer when I reboot it (for it to take effect). Once I rem them out of config.sys, it boots okay.

| I found pmwhy at http://hobbes.nmsu.edu and downloaded it and unzipped it onto my Thinkpad 760EL. I tried it but nothing happened (at least nothing showed on the screen).

| Hi, IIRC, the OS/2 hardware manager can only present the devices to you whose drivers are "hardware-manager aware" - thus, a device in your machine that has no os/2 driver won't appear. Unfortunately, any ISA devices won't be recognized - maybe Sysinfo/2 can help in this case... but not sure: Good luck! BTW: Can you tell us more about the notebook problem? What type of sound chip is built into it? Have you tried freeing possible resources (e.g. removing pcmcia cards) and/or reserving resources for the sound chip that might be allocated by the hardware manager / resource manager otherwise...? | Thanks for the information and the links. I am hoping to figure out the audio chipset used on my IBM Thinkpad 760EL since none of the drivers that are suppose to be for it seem to work (and cause it not to boot). In the bios, the sound tests okay when checked (it has a built in feature to test components).

| Most likely your audio would be an ESS, however why not check IBM Support site there you'll find most info needed and drivers as well. cheers, os2power |

| One of the best tool for recognizing hardware under OS/2 comes from Veit Kannegieser: pci048vkd.zip is currently most accurate and can be found on hobbes |

I totally agree! This is Veit's port of the "pci" program that originates from linux I guess - the device database that contains the ID strings of devices is used by more than a dozen of different products in windows - like SiSoft's "Sandra" which is an extremely good product. If you have dual boot system on that Thinkpad with Windoze installed in a different partition then why not simply boot windoze to identify the sound chip? I checked at the OS/2 DDPAK online web site and as far as I've seen, all possible Thinkpad 760EL type models use an ISA sound chip from ESS. It's either ES688 or ES1688 - the problem is that in each Thinkpad drivers header, it says "ES688" but in the text describing the downloadable files, it says "ES1688". http://www7.software.ibm.com/2bcprod.nsf/WebCat?OpenView&Start=1&Count=300&Expand=41.11#41.11 And here's the URL for the ESS (manufacturer) drivers matrix: Note that because the sound chip is an ISA model, it probably won't appear in pci.exe... good luck anyway! | One more suggestion: Each IBM Thinkpad has an 2 individual identification numbers: 1) a unique serial # On IBM's website one is able to check the i.e. warranty status of the respective unit ... IBM's Thinpads are not cheap ... Good luck ! |

| Thanks for the information and the link. http://www5.pc.ibm.com/us/products.nsf/$wwwPartNumLookup/_9547U4F I have found the information that I was hoping to find at the above link. I used the model number at http://www.ibm.com . It shows that the audio is ES1688. I tried to to install the drivers for this chipset but it indicated it could was an ED1688 chipset. Could the audio chipset be damaged therefore undetectable by the driver and usable by OS/2?

well I don't know. Basically, there's always a chance of a file getting corrupted during download but I guess it's not necessary to worry about differences in hardware ID "strings" that are contained in configuration files, as manufacturers sometimes are too lazy to check what is contained in the template file they used from somewhere else. I checked the TP support downloads, the DDPak dowloads and the files from ESS technology: For the remaining steps, here's my suggestion: Greetings (and again: good luck!) |

| " exception in device driver: ES16881$ " is what I received after installing the OS/2 drivers for Thinkpad 9547-U4F model 760EL. It has happened before. It is the reason I am looking for a program to detect the hardware. I used the PCI 'sniffer' program from http://hobbes.nmsu.edu but it did not see it. Could it be malfunctioning/damaged therefore causing the driver to 'crash' the computer? " The system detected an internal processing error at location ##0168:fff1f322 - 000e:c322. 0586052c " I am at work but the utility diskettes are at home (forgot to put them in the computer case |

Hi, well that's possible of course, but I don't really think that it's the case... it rather seems like some kind of resource allocation problem or simply the "wrong" driver... It might be worth checking the Notebook/2 site if there's somebody who tested the TP 760EL and left his email adress. This way, we might be able to talk to someone who runs Warp on the same machine and ask him if he's having troubles as well or if he rather uses a different parameter set in config.sys for example... I'll try checking this. Greetings |

This sounds familiar. What level of OS/2 are you using? ie. Warp 4 with what Fixpack, or eCS 1.0 or 1.1, or MCP 1, 2 or 3. I remember an error very similar to this with ESS sound cards and going past a particular Warp4 fixpack. And, it's likely that any OS/2 level past that would have the same problem. The solution was to get a different version of the driver. Hopefully, the 2.08 version that was mentioned will work.

| I had tried installing eCS 1.1 but could not get it past the first diskette. I was able to get Warp ver 4 installed. I was also able to install Fixpak 15 using WarpUp. IIRC - was able to install mutimedia support. It seems to crash if I used the universal audio driver or the OS/2 driver that is at http://www.ibm.com for this model ( IIRC - it is the ESS1688 - according to the information from IBM web site for this model - 9547-U4F). I wil check out http://www.os2warp.be but I don't remember seeing anything on it but I might have missed it.

| ... but regarding your sound problems: Why don't you use UNIAUD UNIAUD for Sound is somwhat to compare with SNAP for Graphics !!! |

Sam, as BigWarpGuy already stated above, he tried UNIAUD and it didn't work. And that's no surprise, beause UNIAUD (unlike SNAP for graphics cards) does not support "older" models - especially ISA bus models are NOT supported. BTW: Current list of UNIAUD supported sound cards is here: And still I want to know if BigWarpGuy has finally tried the 2.0.8 drivers from ESS technology!!! Greetings |

That list is out of date. There's an updaed list in the latest release version. There are also test versions that have even more support, but, I don't know of a list of additional chips in these. You would have to look at the UNIAUD support forum for details. But, as you said, this doesn't help BigWarpGuy, because UNIAUD doesn't support ISA sound chip.

| I think there was a conflict of drivers plus I was installing the ESS1688 incorrectly. The sound chips do work since I installed Win95 on it and there is sound (I installed it to try ReactOS on it). Eventually I will put Warp ver 4 back on it but with sound (since I think I know what I did wrong).

Hi that's good. Seems like we were able to help you at least... I was thinking about the fact that your machine is a notebook, not a desktop and thought that the card&socket services for OS/2 might be grabbing a certain i/o adress which the sound drivers migth rely upon (e.g. 330h)... but anyway - if ever you put Warp back on the machine and you're having troubles with the sound: Let us know! Greetings |

| Thanks for the help. It is just a matter of time till I put OS/2 Warp ver 4 back on my Thinkpad 760EL. With Win95 on it, I know that the sound does work. I am trying ReactOS on it, too (with Win95 as the base for it). Once I install Warp ver 4 back on it, I will let everyone know how it does or does not work with the audio drivers.
