There is a forum at the eComStation site - http://www.ecomstation.com/forums - that is inactive except for a couple of spammers. I have given up on that forum. There is a moderator but the person does nothing about the spam even though I have notified them about it. It is a nice forum but I usually refer any posters to check out this forum. It is nice to have an OS/2-eCS forum that does not have any spam.

| There seems to be many individual groups online that SPAM publically accessible Forums and Guestbooks posting inane, insipid and non-specific responses and ads where ever they are able to get away with it, for as long as they can get away doing it. I had to close off many, ixnay, all of the guestbooks to the sites I host because of such SPAMING. Actually, what I did was turn on the "Administrator Approval" option of all Guestbook submissions prior to post. It's still a nuisance, but my users never get exposed to the SPAM. Eventually, the SPAMmers gave up. WRT the forum you're referring to, the fact that your messages to the moderator are going unresponded confirms that this is an unmoderated forum, despite there being a listed moderator. The question you have to ask yourself is; are you getting anything good from that specfic forum? If you are then ignore the idiots. Eventually someone in a position of power will take notice of the spam and do something about it. On the other hand if it's a useless forum that has long since died, then who cares if some dead leaves fall on top of and old grave?

I found the same thing, but ProNews has excellent filters and I rarely see any of that crap anymore on Usenet.

I concur.

| Nice to hear that you guys likes the forum; to be mentioned is that I plan to migrate to another forum script due to that this UltraBoard 2000 is now so totally dead and nothing has happened with it for couple of years. But, kind of like the way how it works and the features that it offer. But, the biggest problem is to get all the old posting alongs... that takes a while to just work and write together a working sql script to take care of this. But, why I would like to mention this is that I really want to jump over to either vBullentin or Invision Power Board (IPB). IPB looks and works rather much like UltraBoard and is rather okey with CPU load where vBullentin really hits the CPU and eats a lots of it... But, kind of open for ideas and suggestion on both forum suggestions and as well on migration ideas for the current data in UltraBoard. /Kim |

| As far as forums go for me there is only one and I've tried them all, (including Ultraboard 2000 and prior versions-I still have some archived). It's PHP based. I have about six copies of SMF, (Small Machines Forum), running right now on different sites and it runs very well, is low on resources, is constantly being updated, is highly configureable and, most important, is free, (except for commercial use). Simple Machines Forums These guys used to make YaBB, (which had a huge following), and moved on to the next level and created SMF. I've followed it, (and used it), from its early beta versions and I can't say enough good about it. It works with many existing portals including Mambo/Joomla, (both dogs in my opinion and I've used them extensively in the past), and it works with their own portal; Tiny Portal which I use on one site. This portal isn't sophisticated, but it's good and fast. There are many addons for SMF and more coming all the time. Test it out. Sorry I can't help you with the SQL scripting, but maybe Simple Machines support can. Hell, maybe one all ready exists for UB2K to SMF. HTHelps.

last updated at 28 Jun, 2006 11:45 (2 times) Never tried SMF but seen once a while; but I will. Is it module driven or is more that one have to hack it to add features? One forum system that I won't pick is phpBB; it's just really bad when it comes to the administration of it (users and groups). About boards and Joomla I find most of the bridge components not working proper. I checked around for the SMF bridge for Joomla and seems that the component isn't ready for production yet. I've tried out Joomla board as well (together with Joomla then) and it works out rather well. Might not give you the best looks but well integrated to the rest of the system. I've been playing around with Mambo for almost 2 years now; but actually I think it's first now I can make proper use of the current Joomla and as well they seem to have an interesting roadmap on where they are going with the project. |

It seems eComStation/Serenity Systems has also given up on the forum since there is no longer a link at http://www.ecomstation.com to the forum. Perhaps they should just delete their forum and have a link to this forum (way more active and helpful than their forum).
