Hi everyong. I've had a few posts on here, got some help some questions were never answered..it happens.. Big problem hit my eCS1.2 machine 2 days ago. I booted up and got a message from "Snap Driver" about it being out of date or something like that, said it was reverting to vga, so OK, no big deal, only thing it never finished the boot. I waited for about 10 min, then rebooted, the system still would not boot to the screen. it always hangs right after the c:\pmshell.exe. I then rebooted into the recovery screen and hit (reset) VGA, and the system again stopped right after (pmshell.exe)... so I again reboot went into recovery screen, and hit (1) last saved archive.. still no desktop... I tried all 3 of the recovered archives plus the original...and still hangs at (pmshell). Worse I can not reinstall eCS1.2 because my registration floppy was damaged by my old floppy... I also tried makeini that did not work...think I tried everything I know of or heard of, even going back to my old OS2 book anyone have any suggestions Best Dave ps: does anyone know were in eCS1.2 the registration is I could try and make another floppy and get going again. right now I had to build a windoz box to get on line..damn funny though, I started up my laptop knowing I have a good eCS1.2 on it..but when I went looking for my wireless card I remembered I had lent it to my Sister in Jan, when she was here...and she forgot to send it back to me...damn.. anyway...any suggestion Best Dave |

The easiest way to get the eCS registration code back is to log into your account on http://www.ecomstation.com/ Under the User Profile section you can download your registration key.Hope this helps |

| Hi, Please try two things, one at a time: 1. Use the ALT-F1 trick when the 'ecs' blob appears at first boot to re-select VGA mode. Reboot and see if it works. 2. Next, use the ALT-F1 trick when the 'ecs' blob appears at first boot to select to boot to the command-line. Go into the \OS2\DLL directory. Make a 'backup' sub-directory, and move all PMI*.* files into the backup subfolder. Reboot, and you should now be OK. The PMI files sometimes prevent VGA mode on some PCs, especially laptops. Regards, Moby. |

| Did you remove the PMI files? Does the desktop background or colour appear, or does the cursor simply continue to flash when the system loads PMSHELL? |

| Hi Dave " I booted up and got a message from "Snap Driver" about it being out of date or something like that"£ Yes, you have a problem. As SNAP is licensed by eCS for inclusion as the video driver for most chipsets it should never display an "out of date" message. I suggest a download of SNAP318 from ecomstation. As someone else has already said you can retrieve your Registration details there as well. Boot to a command line and install SNAP318. A likely cause of failing to display the Desktop after a successful boot is a munged os2.ini or os2sys.ini file(s) - not sure if that would also be responsible for the SNAP "out of date" message but could be if SNAP stores any Reg detail in os2.ini If you have any backups of those files compare the current file sizes against the backups and, if the current files seem small in comparison I suggest replacing them with the backup version(s). Regards Pete |

This was a problem with eCS 1.0,1.1, and 1.2. This has since been fixed in eCS 1.2MR and eCS 2.0 beta I believe. I first discovered this problem when using the gengradd driver. Here is what I originally posted to ecs bugtracker. A while back, I posted to the eCS bugtracker that the early betas were hanging at the PMSHELL.EXE. I was able to track the problem down to one file, the bvhsvga.dll---26848 bytes---2001/09/10 By replacing this file with a later one dated bvhsvga.dll---33216 bytes---2002/08/28 the problem disappeared. You closed the bug report stating that the earlier file had been replaced with the later one. Actually, when you go with the default install using the SDD driver, the later one is installed as expected. However, if one chooses the gengradd driver over the SDD driver, the gengradd installation installs the earlier bvghsvga.dll. As a result, on some machines such as mine, it stops at the PMSHELL.EXE. With the VGA driver, one may need to replace the bvhvga.dll also. The problem is, if one doesn't have a maintenance partition with these updated dlls, the fix cannot be applied. That is why I backed up these two dlls when I used earlier versions of eCS. David David |

SciTech SNAP video drivers for OS/2 install an hidden system file in the root of your OS/2 installation drive: IO32.SYS If the above mentioned file is tampered with and/or can not be found by the SNAP routine at boot time (possibly it was not copied over from your previous hard drive by your XCOPY /H /O /T /S /E /R /V procedure and/or was clobbered during an system issue that you described elsewhere as a result of your migration) you will get the message that you describe and associated symptoms. As an example, when SNAP is activated by an user, that file referenced is the only one that changes to reflect the licensee information and extend the "life" of the trial driver beyond the grace period. On the bright side of your experience, by reinstalling your OS/2 you will get stability of your system. Migrations from dissimilar hardware simply introduce instability variables that will return and mess your OS/2 --irrespective of the mere opinion of others. Best ! |

end of this thread. Hello all, thanks for the assistance...nothing I tried worked... so I just did a format of the drive...and reinstalled eCS. only takes a minute, luckly except for a few files that are not eCS system files I can rebuild my desktop in minutes. But I think there is a problem with the original video drivers that eCS installes. My desktop is slow, ie: mouse movments and draging windows around is jerky, except for those inside another folders..scrolling in firefox is sticky.... Thinking about it now, I think this is what started the problem, I had reset the VGA following the prescribed method, boot Alt F1, F3.... then the system will not reboot, even if an archived save is used...luckly one of my other tricks is after I have my first stable and mostly updated desktop I boot to the install CD and do and xcopy from c: to d:...then boot to c: and make changes to the d: config.sys file making sure all the pointers in this case (c:) are changed to (d:)...then I reboot to D: to make sure everything works correctly......well last night I again tried reboot with F3 and again at the pmshell, she stopped loading... this time I waited for about 20min..just incase, then I booted to to a cd and did a xcopy back from d:/// now i'm up and running...with some extra work. So does anyone have any suggestions about this new video problem? how can I reset the video driver without again loosing my desktop Best Dave |
